Carpe Futura: Celebrate 100 Remarkable Years with Us!

First graduating class from 1910

It began in 1908 with 187 students in one building on a 25-acre campus. Within the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair, students
received superb training to become schoolteachers. From this modest foundation would rise one of America’s premier institutions of public higher education.

Fast forward 100 years to an institution that is one of the leading comprehensive universities in the region, serving nearly 17,000 students
on a 246-acre campus with state-of-the-art academic, cultural and recreational facilities. Montclair State University celebrates its centennial in 2008. Carpe Futura, meaning “seize the future,” is the University’s centennial motto.

Montclair State has seen remarkable change and growth during the first 100 years, but the solid tradition of educational innovation, inspired teaching, scholarly achievement and service to the state and professions has never wavered.

Throughout our centennial year we will salute our past and look toward our promising future as we celebrate this milestone through a variety of activities and events, from arts and cultural programming and sporting events to lectures.
