Hours and Location

Q. What are your hours of operation?
A. Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 4:30. We are open until 7:00 on Monday and Thursday nights during the semester only. Our summer hours (beginning the first week in June and ending the last week in August) are 8:00 to 5:15, Monday through Thursday. There are no evening hours in the summer.

Q. What is your address?
A. Center for Career Services and Community-based Learning, Morehead Hall Room 337, Montclair State University, 1 Normal Ave., Montclair, N.J. 07043.

Q. Where do I sign up for a workshop?
A. You can sign up for workshops at the Center's front desk in Morehead Hall on the third floor or call x5194.

Testing related FAQs

Q. Can I walk into the office and take a vocational test?
A. No. Testing is a part of counseling. Results are interpreted by a counselor and a prior appointment is required to determine which test is appropriate.

Q. How long does it take to get the results of the tests?
A. When returned to this office, approximately two weeks for the Strong Interest Inventory and approximately one week for the M.B.T.I. Your counselor will explain each test result in an individual appointment.

Resume Critiquing FAQs

Q. If I can't make it to Drop-in, how else can I get my resume/cover letter critiqued?
A. You can drop it off here. It will be critiqued and ready to pick-up within 3 days.

Q. I understand that you critique resumes and cover letters. Do you critique class work?
A. No. Tutorial services handles that area. Go to Morehead Hall. Take the elevator to 1R. Tutorial Services is located in room 143.

Cooperative Education FAQs

Q. Do I have to apply for Cooperative Education?
A. Yes. You must attend one of the Cooperative Education workshops. You can sign up for the workshop at the Center’s front desk in Morehead Hall or call x5194.

Q. How do I qualify for Cooperative Education?
A. • You must have earned 30 credits and have a 2.0 minimum GPA before applying. Some academic departments have additional requirements.
• If you transfer into MSU with an associates degree or a bachelors degree, you don’t have to obtain any course credit at MSU to be eligible.
• If you transfer into MSU without a degree, you must complete at least 9 credits at MSU, have at least 30 credits accumulated (including MSU and transfer credits), and have a 2.0 minimum GPA.

Q. How can I arrange college credit for an internship that I’ve been offered with a company?
A. You can arrange college credit for an internship through Cooperative Education or through a department internship course, if one is offered by your major department.

Q. Do I pay for Cooperative Education credits?
A. Yes. You pay tuition and f
ees just as you do for any other course.

Service Learning related FAQs

Q. What is Service-Learning at MSU?
A. Service-Learning courses integrate organized community service activities with academic study.

Q. What do MSU Service-Learning students do?
A. All students enrolled in a Service-Learning course participate in a community based project that addresses an identified need. Service projects are developed by the University in collaboration with community partners.

Q. Why should you enroll in a Service-Learning course?
A.Here's what students tell us:

  • The experience helps students make decisions about majors.
  • Students develop problem solving skills.
  • Service-Learning provides a connection between the classroom and the real world.

Q. How can you identify Service-Learning courses on WESS?
A. Service-Learning courses have a "standard note" (SL) attached, which indicates that a community service project is one of the course requirements.

Q. Does this office provide help with completing graduate school personal essays?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you have exam forms for the GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.?
A. Yes. Booklets are available in the office.

Q. Will you mail me a booklet (GRE, LSAT, GMAT, etc.)?
A. No, but ETS will. Their number is 1 (609) 921-9000 (Princeton, NJ).

Employer related FAQs

Q. I'd like to fax a teaching job. Where should I send it?
A. Questions regarding teaching jobs and certification are handled by the Center of Pedagogy. Their number is (973) 655-4262 or x7691.

Q. I'd like to post a professional position. How do I do so?
A. Register for our web based system, College Central, free of charge, by going to http://www.collegecentral.com/montclair.

Q. Do you have job listings?
A. Yes. Full-time job books are white and part-time job books are black. Internship opportunities are listed as well. Employers are encouraged to list jobs via College Central, our web based system. Students need to register with the system in order to access jobs.

Q. Where else can I find job listings other than in the job books?
A. Go to the Internet Resources section of this web site.

Q. How do I find on-campus employment?
A. Through College Central or the student assistant job book and, for students who qualify, the federal work study job book.

Q. Do you have information on companies?
A. Yes. Check the blue section of our career library and selected Internet links.

Computer Lab related FAQs

Q. Do I have to bring my own resume paper?
A. Yes. The first copy is free. Additional copies are $.10 each.

Q. What kinds of computers are in the lab?
A. Dell PCs. You should bring a blank disc with you or have information saved in MS Word.

Q. What are the lab hours?
A. The computers are available whenever the office is open unless an on-line workshop is in process.

Q. Can I print pages from Focus?
A. Yes.

Q. I'm not an M.S.U. student and never have been. What services can I use?
A. You are welcome to use the Career Library.

Q. Can you refer me to outside counselors if I am not a student or alum?
Yes. Visit the National Board for Certified Counselors.
