Overview

Philosophy for Children is an internationally recognized program that focuses on cultivating dialogue, inquiry and good judgment in children and adolescents. The Master of Education with a concentration in Philosophy for Children is designed for those philosophers, teachers, authors and publishers of children's literature interested in helping young people become better thinkers.  This program of study invites candidates to construct their own community of inquiry focusing on key issues relating to democratic pedagogy, curriculum, and cognitive, affective, social and ethical development.

Full-time students attend four semesters, the first and last of which are ten day residential sessions held off campus ina community setting.  Part time students wishing to enroll over a longer period of time are also welcome to apply.  In addition to a range of theoretical subjects, students have the opportunity to acquire classroom experience doing philosophy with children and analyzing their experience under the supervision of faculty in the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children.

Montclair State University has been the international home of philosophy for children since the inauguration of the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) since 1974. IAPC faculty members have international reputations in philosophy for children and the teaching of thinking, and are at the forefront of teaching and research in these areas. Since 1974, students and scholars from all over the world have made their way to Montclair to study together, under the guidance and direction of this outstanding faculty.

The Master of Education in Philosophy for Children offers students an experience of outstanding pedagogy with the opportunity to think about some of philosophy's and education's most interesting and pressing issues, all in an environment of friendly, stimulating collegiality.  It is also preparation for doctoral study in philosophy for children, philosophy and education.  Montclair State University now offers an Ed.D. in Pedagogy with a specialization in Philosophy for Children at Montclair State University housed in the University's Center of Pedagogy.
