How do I find out who my Family and Child Studies advisor is?
Please check the Web Enrollment Services for Students' (WESS) website.
What can my Family and Child Studies advisor assist me with?
Your Family and Child Studies advisor can assist you with selecting courses in your major, your specific concentration, and your general education requirements. Courses that begin with the prefix "FCST" are offered in the Family and Child Studies Department.
What do I do if the Family and Child Studies courses I want to register for are closed or if WESS indicates that I need to have certain prerequisite courses?
First, check to see if there are any open sections of the courses you want to register for. If all sections are closed, see
Shannon Bellum, the department administrator, in Mallory Hall, room 152. In some cases you may want to meet with your faculty advisor. Continue to check WESS in the event seats become available in the course you want or if new sections of the course are opened.
I want to work with children and families, but I do not want to teach in a school setting. Which Family and Child Studies concentration should I choose?
If you want to work with children and their families in a therapeutic setting, select the Family and Child Studies-Child Life concentration.
If you want to work with children and/or families in social service agencies (e.g. DYFS), community-based services (e.g. WMCA or Boys and Girls Clubs), or not-for-profit organizations, select the Family and Child Studies-Family Services concentration.
If you want to work with older adults and their families in community-based organizations, not-for profit agencies, or for profit organizations, select the Family and Child Studies-Gerontology concentration.
I want to be certified to teach preschool, kindergarten, and the first few grades in elementary school. I do not want to teacher in the upper elementary school grades. What do I major in?
Major in Family and Child Studies with a concentration in Family and Child Studies-Early Childhood Education , for preschool through third grade teacher certification in the State of New Jersey.
I want to be certified as an elementary school teacher. What should I major in?
Major in Family and Child Studies with a concentration in Family and Child Studies-Early and Middle Childhood Education, to be certified as an elementary school teacher in the State of New Jersey –or- check with the Office of Teacher Education to learn about additional majors you can take along with the teacher education course sequence for certification in elementary education.
What do I do if I have questions about courses either in the elementary (K-5) or preschool through third grade (P-3) teacher education sequence, student teaching, or teacher certification requirements?
Contact the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary and Literacy Education (973 655-5407 or 973 655-7360). In some cases you may be referred to the Office of Teacher Education (973 655-7976) or the Center of Pedagogy (973 655-4262).
What do I do if I have questions about the Praxis exam?

I would like to change my major or my concentration. What do I do?
Obtain a "change of major" form from the Family and Child Studies office, in Finley Hall, room 111. Fill out the top part and: meet with your advisor who will review and sign the form; or meet with the department administrator to review and sign the form; or discuss the change with your advisor via email or telephone and leave the completed form along with a note of explanation in Finley Hall, room 111 - Shannon Bellum, the department administrator.
I am interested in other subject areas and would like to pursue a
minor. How do I choose a minor and what do I need to do to complete
one?
It is not necessary to have a minor, but often students in the
Family and Child Studies department pursue minors in related topic areas, such as
Psychology or Sociology. Another option is to select a minor in a
school subject area, such as Math, English, or a language (such as French or Spanish). Contact the department which offers the minor to learn what the current requirements are and submit a “change of major/minor” form to that department for signature.
