Program Objective:

The program's objective is to serve certified teachers who are currently teaching health education in a classroom setting and want to continue their education. The courses have been chosen to provide pedagogical and content-based knowledge and skills grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health. For classroom teachers whose primary focus is not health, as weel as those for whom it is, furthering their knowledge and skill base in health education based on the most current research and theories in the field expands the expertise they share with their students. Additionally, it increases their ability to meet the mandated standards that are part of the state's standardized tests in the elementary, middle and high schools.

The certificate program will also meet the needs of professionals working in community agencies, business, higher education and non-teaching school settings that include a health education function.

Options for Online Study:

The Department of Health & Nutrition Sciences will begin offering its graduate programs in Health Education in a fully-online format, and applications are currently being accepted and admitted students may begin taking classes as soon as Spring 2011. Graduate programs include:

Online MA in Health Education

The master's program in Health Education prepares professionals for careers in health education and various selected areas of the health professions, and provides advanced study for K-12 health teachers. Advanced study is provided to candidates engaged in, or seeking, positions in the broad and expanding spectrum of the health professions in the school, community, business and industrial sectors, the media and various other segments of the health care delivery system. This 36-credit master's program may be completed fully-online in 1.5 years while working full-time.

Online Health Education Certificate

The program's objectives will meet the needs of two audiences:

  • Certified teachers who are currently teaching health education in a classroom setting and want to continue their education. The courses have been chosen to provide pedagogical and content-based knowledge and skills grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health. For classroom teachers whose primary focus is not health, as well as those for whom it is, furthering their knowledge and skill base in health education based on the most current research and theories in the field expands the expertise they share with their students.
  • Professionals working in community agencies, business, higher education and non-teaching school settings that include a health education function.

This 12-credit certificate program may be completed fully-online in two semesters while working full-time.
