Graduate Programs of Study & Requirements
The Montclair State M.A. in English provides a rich, dynamic, and rigorous curriculum taught by a highly qualified faculty that includes many scholars of national and international reputation. We offer small seminars in both regular and special topics examining areas such as Shakespeare’s Tragedies, the Latin American Novel, the American Gothic, Community-Based Writing, and Documentary Film. Our curriculum provides excellent preparation for Ph.D. programs, and we have placed recent graduates at leading programs including CUNY, Rutgers, Temple, and Arizona State; others have found jobs teaching at community colleges. Secondary school teachers appreciate the enrichment we offer in a variety of literary areas, and many take advantage of our innovative program in Writing Studies.
Some students develop skills that benefit them in the worlds of business or non-profit, while others enroll with the primary goal of personal intellectual development. With a long history as one of the region’s leading programs, MSU also offers close proximity to New York City. Graduate assistantships and other scholarships are available. For more information, explore the links on this page, or contact the Interim Graduate Director, Prof. Jeffrey Miller, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We also offer a 12-credit Certificate in Teaching Writing, an M.A.T. in Teaching English, and additional post-BA programs in Teacher Education. For Graduate Programs in Teacher Education please see our Teacher Education Page.
