Study Abroad

Have you considered participating in a study abroad program or an internship this summer?
If you'd like to combine these experiences, you can apply for a Washington Center intern abroad program in one of four exciting cities--London, England; Oxford, England; Quebec City, Canada; or Sydney, Australia.

Students interning abroad through The Washington Center during summer 2009 will attend a brief seminar which introduces them to the U.S. capital and their destination city prior to flying off to the U.K., Australia or Canada. There they will intern full-time in a tailored placement, complete academic course work and participate in programming activities as well as have the opportunity to travel. They'll learn to appreciate another culture and expand their knowledge of our increasingly global world. Each program will help students gain a valuable comparative understanding of culture and professional life--an important asset in today's global workforce.

Here are examples of placements in the Women's and Gender Studies field:

  • Women Aid International (London): An organization that assists women and deals with issues around the world.
  • Womankind Worldwide (London): UK charity dedicated to the furtherance of women's issues worldwide.
  • Women’s Health (London): Organization dedicated to specific women's health issues
  • Birthing Rites (Sydney): Small mid-wife and birthing center focusing on natural preparation for the event of birth and after. A leading provider of the highest quality pregnancy education and counseling in the field of childbirth and parenting education. Students will be involved with prenatal classes, parenting support classes, childbirth education courses, post natal yoga and a vast array of support services for new and expecting mothers and partners. Full-time counseling service for individuals and families is also available for students to be involved with.

If you'd like to enroll in one of these programs, you should submit an application through our online system before our deadline of February 27. Prior to submitting your application you must receive approval from your campus liaison, Sally McWilliams or Brian Murdock AND review the requirements for WMGS 436.
