The purpose of MSU's Smile Station is provide those within the campus an opportunity to volunteer their time in a rare yet very significant way. MSU's Smile Station will be the first of many which are expected to be born on other college campuses across the country. It will provide a resource for students who wish to get involved with the Turn-a-Frown-around Foundation, a non-profit organization which was established to help the less fortunate. Volunteers of TAFA are called "Forever Friends", and these friends visit various psychiatric facilities, nursing homes, and children's hospitals, to bring patients a reason to smile who would otherwise have no one else in the world visit them.
TAFA has been called the "Compassion Crusade", and has received recognition for its spirit and potential from numerous experts in the field of psychology. The founder, Drew Horn, a former patient himself, has received high honors and widespread support for the work he has done with TAFA, and was portrayed in the documentary, "Crazy Enough to Care"; the film was won awards.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead
