Commencement exercises will take place indoors at the Izod Center within the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ, on Friday, May 23, 2008 beginning at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony will last approximately 90 minutes. Students' names are not read during the ceremony.

Candidates who will complete their degree requirements by May 2008 and who, after filing for a final audit, are on the May 2008 graduation list, are eligible to participate in the Commencement exercises. Those whose degrees were conferred in August 2007 or January 2008 also are eligible to participate. Since there is unlimited seating, you may bring as many guests as you wish.

Individual College and School Convocation Information

Each College and School will host a Graduation Convocation Ceremony for those students who will complete their degree requirements by May 2008 and for those whose degrees were conferred in August 2007 and January 2008. While the University Commencement on May 23 signifies the official conferral of degrees, the individual College and School Convocations are pre-commencement ceremonies celebrating students' achievements.   Unlike the May 23 Commencement exercises, seating is limited and tickets are required for the Convocations.

All ceremonies will be held in the Amphitheater.   In case of inclement weather, the Convocation ceremony will be postponed.  Please call the weather hotline at 973-655-7810 or log on to www.montclair.edu for up to the minute weather information.   Please note that Master's degree candidates are to attend the Convocation on May 14 only. The calendar of Graduation Convocation Ceremonies is as follows:

  • All Masters Candidates, Wednesday, May 14th at 7 p.m.
  • College of the Arts, Thursday, May 15th at 7 p.m.
  • College of Science and Mathematics, Friday, May 16th at 7 p.m.
  • College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Saturday, May 17th at 2 p.m.
  • College of Education and Human Services, Sunday, May 18th at 2 p.m.
  • School of Business, Monday, May 19th at 7 p.m.

Tickets will be available April 2008 and can be obtained through your College or School's Convocation site (links above).

Academic Regalia

ROBES
Students participating in Convocation ceremonies and/or the Commencement exercises are required to wear academic robes. Caps and gowns may be purchased at the University Bookstore during regular store hours beginning Wednesday, May 7, and continuing through Monday, May 19.   They will be available again from noon to closing beginning Tuesday, May 20, and continuing through Thursday, May 22.   Bachelor's robes are $59. Eligible bachelor's degree candidates must purchase their regalia in person and will be required to present a valid student I.D. or driver's license at the time of purchase.   All purchases of academic attire are nonrefundable. In honor of the University's centennial, the first 2000 undergraduates to purchase their regalia will recieve a commemorative centennial stole.

Master's degree candidates must order their regalia through Herff Jones at www.herffjones.com/college/graduation by March 3, 2008. Master's robes are $62.   Orders may be picked up at the University Bookstore during regular store hours beginning Wednesday, May 7, and continuing through Monday, May 19.   They will be available again from noon to 7 p.m. beginning Tuesday, May 20 and continuing through Thursday, May 22. Masters degree candidates must present a valid student I.D. or driver's license at the time of pick up.   No orders will be accepted after March 3, 2008, and all purchases of academic attire are non-refundable.

Doctoral candidates participating in the Commencement exercises should contact Dr. Kim O'Halloran, Associate Dean of the College of Education and Human Services, at ohallorank@mail.montclair.edu, no later than March 30, 2008, to order their academic attire.

STOLES AND HOODS
Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Fine Arts do not wear hoods.   All Bachelor degree candidates wear a red stole.

The hoods for the Master's and Doctoral degrees are lined with the official colors of Montclair State University, red and white. The colors of the outside trim of the hood associated with each degrees are as follows:

Master of Arts (MA): white
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT): light blue
Master of Business Administration (MBA): light brown
Master of Education (MEd): light blue
Master of Fine Arts (MFA): brown
Master of Science (MS): gold

Doctor of Audiology (ScD): gold
Doctor of Education (EdD): light blue
Doctor of Environmental Management (D.Env.M): gold

Please Note: Academic Hoods are NOT to be worn for Convocation but will be worn at Commencement.

DIPLOMA AND DIPLOMA COVERS
Diplomas will be mailed to May degree recipients within one week of the degree conferral date (May 23). Diploma covers are provided free of charge and may be picked up with your cap and gown. A valid student I.D. or driver's license is required.

GRADUATION HONORS
The honors averages for Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude are 3.85, 3.65 and 3.45 respectively. Students who are receiving a bachelor's degree with these honors may wear a gold tassel on their cap at the Commencement exercises. In order to be eligible, you must have completed a minimum of 51 undergraduate credits at Montclair State. Grades of "A" through "D-" must be received for a minimum of 48 of these 51 credits.

For recognition of May candidates at the Commencement Exercises, the honors designation will be based upon the student's cumulative grade point average as of the previous January plus the anticipated MSU credits that will be earned by the end of the Spring semester.

Gold tassels may be picked up when you purchase your cap and gown. University Bookstore employees will have a list of all eligible honors graduates, and students will be required to present a valid student I.D. or driver's license to receive their gold tassel.

The honors designation will appear in the Commencement program. For May candidates who earn honors once the degree is conferred, the designation will appear on the official transcript approximately one month after graduation. It also will be indicated on an Honors Diploma, which will be mailed approximately two months after the conferment date.

There are no honors designations for graduate students.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Since there is unlimited guest seating at the Izod Center, tickets to the ceremony are not necessary. Graduates wishing to send Commencement announcements to friends and family may purchase them at the University Bookstore. Announcements will be available April 1 at $1.50 each or $14.00 for a pack of 10.

CLEARANCES
All students must meet all financial obligations prior to receiving their diploma or final transcripts. Financial obligations include but are not limited to tuition, room, board, course fees, parking fines, library fines, residence hall fines, and any special fees or fines charged to a student's account. Please be aware there is also a $70 Commencement/Graduation Fee billed to all graduating students.

This is a non-refundable fee assessed to all students who have filed for graduation with the Registrar's Office. It covers part of the costs associated with Commencement and College or School convocations. All students should view their account summary via WESS at http://wfs.montclair.edu/ for payment methods. LINE-UP
Graduating students should report to the exhibition storage area on the lowest level of the arena. Enter the building through the box office lobby and proceed down the escalator. Make a right and continue to the exhibition area. Signs will be posted to indicate specific departmental locations.

GUEST SEATING
Arena doors will open at 9:00 a.m., and all guests should be seated by 9:45 a.m. There is no reserved seating. Please inform your guests of your degree and College/School so they can seat themselves in the area from which they can best see you. A diagram is provided to help you determine your position in the center. All Master's candidates are seated as a group. Baccalaureate candidates are seated with the department in which their majors are housed.

Doctoral candidates will sit with their dissertation advisors on the platform.

POSSESSIONS
Pocketbooks or other carried articles are not acceptable in the academic procession; please remember to keep your car keys in a safe place.

ACCESSIBILITY
A special parking area for people with physical disabilities is available at the Izod Center and all entrances are ramped. Guests who need wheelchair accessible seating should follow signs posted on the main concourse level or ask ushers for assistance.

SNACK FACILITIES
Light refreshments may be purchased at the center concession stands. Flowers, cameras and film are not available for purchase at the center.

LEAVING THE CENTER
Following the ceremony, guests will exit the center from the concourse level and graduates will march directly out of the arena through the box office lobby doors. No one will be allowed to remain in the lobby or to re-enter the lobby from the concourse level. Please plan to meet friends or relatives outside the center doors or at their cars.

DRIVING/PARKING
The Meadowlands Sports Complex has ample free parking. Guards will be available to direct you and your guests to appropriate parking areas.

DIRECTIONS TO THE IZOD CENTER

FROM MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY
Follow Route 3 East to the Sports Complex.

FROM THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE
Follow Interstate 95 South and signs to the New Jersey Turnpike. Take the Turnpike's western spur to the Sports Complex Exit, which provides direct access to the Sports Complex parking areas, or Exit 16W.

FROM THE LINCOLN TUNNEL
Follow Route 3 West to the Sports Complex.

NORTHBOUND ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE
Take the western spur to Exit 16W, which provides direct access to parking areas. If congested, continue north to Exit 18W; use the turn-around and follow signs to the Sports Complex.

SOUTHBOUND ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY
Leave the Parkway at Exit 163 and follow Route 17 South to Paterson Plank Road. Take Paterson Plank Road east to the Sports Complex.

NORTHBOUND ON THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY
Leave the Parkway at Exit 153A and follow Route 3 East to the Sports Complex.
