Earning a bachelor’s degree with honors is a tremendous accomplishment! Students who earn this distinction may wear a gold tassel on their cap at Commencement. Honors levels are designated as:
- Cumulative GPA of 3.700 – 3.799 cum laude
- Cumulative GPA of 3.800 – 3.899 magna cum laude
- Cumulative GPA of 3.900 – 4.000 summa cum laude
The honors designation will appear in the Commencement program. For May candidates, the honors listed will reflect their GPA as of the end of winter term 2017 and will be correctly reflected on the diploma, which will be mailed approximately FOUR TO FIVE weeks after the conferment date. HONORS FOR SUMMA CUM LAUDE, MAGNA CUM LAUDE AND CUM LAUDE ARE 3.9, 3.8 AND 3.7 RESPECTIVELY. NOTE THAT 51 HOURS EARNED AT MONTCLAIR STATE ARE REQUIRED IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE GPAS.
There are no honors designations for graduate students.
In order to graduate with honors, you must have completed a minimum of 51 undergraduate credits at Montclair State. Grades of “A” through “D-” must be received for a minimum of 48 of these 51 credits.
For recognition of May candidates at the Commencement exercises, the honors designation will be based upon the student’s cumulative grade point average as of the previous winter term.
Please note that this calculation is for Commencement program recognition only, and will not determine official honors. The actual awarding of honors will be based on academic statistics earned at the conclusion of the spring semester, when the degree is conferred.
You may pick up your gold tassel when you pick up your cap and gown at Grad Fair. University Bookstore employees will have a list of all eligible honors graduates, and you will be required to present a valid student I.D. or driver’s license to receive your gold tassel.
If your regalia is being shipped to your home, you may pick up your tassel at Grad Fair, the Bookstore or as a last resort, at Commencement when you check in.
