BS/DMD dental program with Rutgers University (7-year program)

Montclair State University and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine offer a combined program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree at Montclair State and the Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree at Rutgers. Its purpose is to permit highly qualified students to complete the required courses for baccalaureate and dental degrees in a seven-year sequence.

This program requires three years of full-time study at Montclair State in an approved accelerated major program, followed by four years of full-time study at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Qualified students who are in their fourth term (semesters) at MSU may apply for admission to the undergraduate phase of the Program. Applications should include the submission of a completed application to the Program director at MSU, a personal statement, official college transcript, and at least three letters of recommendation from science professors. After preliminary evaluation, selected applicants will be invited for interviews. Two separate interviews of the applicant will be conducted, one at MSU and one at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Following the interviews, the applicants will be notified of admission decisions in writing.

For admission into the Dental Phase of the Program, students must have completed two terms of College English (6 credits), General Biology I and II with laboratory (8 credits), Physics I and II with laboratory (8 credits), General Chemistry I and II with laboratory (8 credits), and Organic Chemistry I and II with laboratory (8 credits) with no withdrawals or incomplete grades and a cumulative science grade point average of 3.50 or better. All prerequisites must be completed at MSU in three years. In addition, candidates must have completed their college general education requirements and major electives required by MSU. Minimum DAT scores must be achieved, but are not necessarily sufficient to guarantee admission: Academic Average, 20 and Total Science, 20. Acceptance to the Dental Phase of the Program will be contingent upon recommendation by the Executive Committee, satisfactory completion of the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT), and a favorable decision by Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. After three years at MSU, students who have been admitted to Rutgers School of Dental Medicine will enroll in the first year dental school courses, which may be applied towards elective credits for the undergraduate degree at MSU.

The undergraduate degree from Montclair State for those in the Program will be bestowed on each student after successful completion of the first year of the Dental Program. Upon completion of the Program, the students receive a D.M.D. degree from Rutgers School of Dental Medicine.
