Important Information for General Chem I Prerequisite
A satisfactory score on the Mathematics Readiness Test OR completion of MATH-100 (Intermediate Algebra) with a grade of C- or better. All arrangements for the Mathematics Readiness test are made through the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Continuing Students, Visiting Students and Transfer Students must provide documentation to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of completion of this prerequisite before being allowed to register in CHEM-120.
A satisfactory score on the Chemistry Readiness Test OR completion of Principles of Chemistry (CHEM-106) with a grade of C- or better.
The Chemistry Readiness Test consists of 35 multiple-choice questions covering some of the basic concepts from a high school chemistry course. The topics on the Readiness include the following:
- Unit Conversions
- The Metric System
- Symbols and Formulas for elements and chemicals
- Basic Stoichiometry
- The concepts of atoms, molecules and moles
- Solutions and gases
In order to take General Chemistry I, a student must score at least 15 correct answers on the Readiness Test and no student will be permitted to take the Readiness Test more than once. A score of 14 or lower requires that the student successfully complete CHEM-106 with a grade of C- or better before taking General Chemistry I (CHEM-120).
Only those students who do not earn a satisfactory score on the Chemistry Readiness Test may take CHEM-106. This course does not meet any General Education requirements nor any of the requirements for any major, it is solely meant to prepare students for CHEM-120.
A table of constants, conversion factors and a Periodic Table of the Elements will be provided along with scrap paper and pencils. The test will be administered and scored through the Canvas system. There is only one correct answer to each question and there is no penalty for an incorrect answer. Students will be able to go back to change an answer or to answer any questions that have been skipped. Students will have 60 minutes to complete the test.
Continuing Students, Visiting Students and Transfer Students can make arrangements through the Department to take the Readiness Test. The Chemistry Readiness Test is offered during the following times:
- Monday's - 9am - 1pm
- Tuesday’s - 10am - 2pm
Please contact Dr. M. L. Kasner (973-655-7121 or firstname.lastname@example.org) for more information or to be placed on the calendar for the Test. Students who have taken CHEM120 in the past and failed the course, must take the Readiness test before re-enrolling. Students who earned a grade of D in CHEM120 can retake the course without taking the Readiness Test.
All Readiness Testing for incoming freshman students is handled by the Center for Academic Development and Assessment (CADA).
