Meet the Director
Dr. Jorge Berkowitz joined the College of Science and Mathematics at Montclair State University in October, 2013 to guide the College in the development of a robust collection of course offerings designed to fulfill continuing education needs for the Licensed Site Remediation Professionals as well as other professionals who work within the region’s environmental sector.
Dr. Berkowitz is an environmental consultant with a distinguished record of accomplishment in environmental education and management, with highly specialized expertise in remediating and redeveloping contaminated sites, regulatory compliance, environmental health and Brownfield Redevelopment.
A graduate of Rutgers University with a PhD in Environmental Science, Dr. Berkowitz has more than 35 years of experience in the private and public sectors as well as academia. He also spent over eight years with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in various positions including serving as the Administrator of the NJDEP's Superfund Program, Director of the Air Quality Program, Director of the Department's Water Resource Management and Protection Program, and Acting Assistant Commissioner for Environmental Control and Management. He is currently a Senior Consultant/Vice President with Langan Engineering and Environmental Services.
Dr. Berkowitz was significantly involved in the Site Remediation and Reform Act (2006), serving as one of two consultants on the NJDEP Site Remediation stakeholder group tasked with conceptualizing improvements to the overall site remediation plan throughout the state. He represented various councils and associations at key meetings and legislative hearings, and was instrumental in the development of a workable LSRP bill.
In 2010, he was appointed by Governor Chris Christie to the New Jersey Site Remediation Professional Licensing Board which was established to enforce the code of conduct and professional standards required of Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs).
