Center for Environmental Management and Analysis (CEMA)
The Center for Environmental Management & Analysis (CEMA) at Montclair State University is a part of the College of Science and Mathematics in the Department of Earth & Environmental Studies.
CEMA provides University-wide leadership and coordination for energy, and environment, related research and service activities. The Center focuses its resources to address:
- air and water quality issues
- solid and hazardous waste
- sediment and land contamination
- coastal resource management
The Center's base of researchers are drawn from a wide range of academic departments at the University. These researchers specialize in:
- environmental business issues
- environmental sustainability
- waste management solutions and analysis
- alternative energy systems (wind, solar, geothermal, hydro)
- geo-chemical and soils analysis
- hydrologic modeling
- geoscience and underground penetrating radar
- GIS mapping and remote sensing
CEMA partners with business, government and non-profit organizations to solve many of the environmental problems facing New Jersey, the region, and the global community. While drawing much of its staff from the university community, CEMA also partners with consultants and environmental professionals on research assignments and technical contracts from a wide variety of groups, locally, regionally, and globally.
Although a part of Montclair State University, CEMA receives its funding from technical assistance and project management contracts; through seminars and training programs that it provides to its clients; through publication of its research working papers; and through foundation grants.
CEMA is currently involved in a project analyzing brownfield sites in Paterson, New Jersey for potential redevelopment. It is also involved in technical projects in both renewable energy and energy conservation. It is working with a number of professional energy consultants to develop protocols for Net Metering for the state of New Jersey. The program is intended to remove barriers and develop infrastructure for the introduction of photovoltaic power and solar hot water on a wide scale in New Jersey. It is also working with a non-profit interfaith organization to develop energy efficiencies in New Jersey congregations.

- Water-land systems approach to coastal management that considers the interactions of fluvial, estuarine, marine, groundwater, and wetland systems with patterns of human settlement and industry.
- Analysis of contaminants in marine sediment and their transportation using chemodynamic modeling.
- Environmental management systems that establish sustainability indicators, goals, and evaluation for a wide range of organizations.
- Linking environmental models to remote sensing and GIS for application to landscape dynamics.
