Climate change, rapid and easy transit between continents, increased longevity, and evolving microbes, has led to new challenges to human health.  Within the College of Science and Mathematics we have faculty and students seeking to better understand and control an array of major issues confronting us in the 21st century, including health related challenges ranging from parasitic diseases to cancer to obesity.

Anticancer Effects of a Chinese Herb

  • Chinese Herb Induces Apoptosis in Human Breast Cancer Cells Dr. Halaby's lab studies the anticancer effects of triptolide. Triptolide induces apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Control cells (A), 15 nM triptolide (B), 30 nM triptolide (C), 42 nM triptolide (D), and 83 nM triptolide (E). Control cells display normal adherent morphology. In contrast, treated cells round up, lose cell-to-cell contacts, and detach from the tissue culture flask with increasing triptolide concentration. The scale bar is 50 μm.
  • ‌‌Effect of Triptolide on Chromatin Condensation Triptolide induces chromatin condensation, a hallmark of apoptosis, in experimental MCF-7 cells (B) as detected by staining with Hoechst dye. Control cells (A). The scale bar is 100 μm.

Disease Extinction

  • Billings Diseases readings This figure describes how a disease dies out in a population. Using 20,000 stochastic realizations of an SIR epidemiological model, we record the extinction prehistory. The colors describe the histogram of this data, with red corresponding to most frequently used paths. The black curve is the theoretically predicted optimal path to extinction, representing the average behavior. Research by Dr. Lora Billings, Mathematical Sciences.

Enzyme Inhibition

  • Goodey Enzyme graphic Dihydrofolate reductase is an enzyme that is critical for life in all organisms because it is involved in nucleic acid metabolism.  As it is essential for life, inhibition of this important enzyme in pathogenic organisms is an interesting way of treating infections in people.  A particularly desirable goal is to use existing drugs that have been developed to target dihydrofolate reductase from a variety of pathogens including tuberculosis and malaria and consider the possibility of using these compounds to treat other pathogens causing suffering in the developing world.  Dr. Goodey and her students have developed a method to predict those residues that are most important in determining what drugs inhibit a particular dihydrofolate based on sequence comparisons.  Efforts are underway to experimentally test these predictions in model dihydrofolate reductase enzymes and to apply the information to dihydrofolate reductase from pathogens that cause filariasis and other tropical diseases.
