Affiliate

Stipend

  • No stipend is provided to affiliates. However, LSAMP information, opportunities, and resources will be open to affiliates. For example, GRE books and courses by Kaplan have been covered by LSAMP for affiliates.
  • While affiliates do not receive stipends, the affiliates participation in the current year will add support to their scholar application for the following year.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Scholar circles are mandatory (1 hr/week).
    • Four absences maximum for scholar circles per semester.
      • The only situation that is considered excusedis going to the hospital. Proof must be shown to the mentor.
        • Everything else is unexcused and counts as an absence.
    • Making up absences:
      • We will keep the method of making up absences before the week is over.
        • If an affiliate misses a circle, they must find another circle to attend before the week is over.
        • If the affiliate’s original circle is towards the end of the week, then they must then attend two circles the following week in order to make up the absence.
  • Study sessions are mandatory (1hr/week)
    • Affiliates (scholars and mentors as well) will choose a course that they are taking during the semester and create a study session group of students with the same course. They will meet once a week for one hour to help each other understand and pass the course.
    • Four absences maximum for study sessions per semester.
  • Monthly meetings are mandatory (1.25/month).
    • Only 1 absence is allowed maximum.
    • Monthly meetings will be on the last Wednesday of each month at 4pm.
  • Affiliates will be kicked out of LSAMP if they exceed 4 absences for scholar circles, or if they exceed 4 absences for study sessions, or if they exceed one monthly meeting.

Eligibility

  • Must be in a STEM field in CSAM.
  • Can be full time and part time students.
  • Must be an undergraduate student.
  • No GPA requirement.
  • Must be sure they can commit to the hours mentioned in the guidelines.
  • Conducting research as an affiliate will not be required, but highly encouraged.

Mentor

Stipend

  • Mentors will be given a $4000 stipend that will be split between the fall and spring semester. $2000 will be given at the end of the fall semester, and the other $2000 will be given at the end of the spring semester.
  • Checks will be held until the end of the semesters to ensure that mentors complete their roles and responsibilities, outlined below.

  • Attending the bi weekly mentor meeting is mandatory (1 hr/2 weeks).
    • 2 absences maximum per semester is allowed.
  • Leading the weekly scholar circle is mandatory (1 hr/weekly).
  • Study sessions are mandatory (1hr/week)
    • Mentors (scholars and affiliates as well) will choose a course that they are taking during the semester and create a study session group of students with the same course. They will meet once a week for one hour to help each other understand and pass the course.
    • Maximum of 2 absences for the study sessions per semester.
  • Attending the monthly LSAMP meetings are mandatory (1.25 hr/month).
    • 1 absence maximum is allowed per semester.
  • Must be doing independent research.

Eligibility

  • Must be in a STEM field in CSAM.
  • Can be full time and part time students.
  • Must be an undergraduate student.
  • Must have participated—simply attending monthly meetings is not enough—in LSAMP for at least a year before applying as mentor.
  • Must be sure they can commit to the hours mentioned in the guidelines.
  • Must be currently conducting independent research or have research ready to do at the beginning of the academic year as a mentor.
  • Be willing to make yourself available to an extent.
  • Documents to be turned in:
    • Application.
    • Unofficial transcript.

Scholar

Stipend

    • By the end of fall semester, scholars must be linked to a professor to do research in the spring.
      • Scholars must have their professors email their mentor as proof that they are going to do research.   
    • Graduating seniors in the fall semester:
      • Scholars who will graduate in the fall semester must do the alternative and present to their circle at the end of the fall semester.

Scholars will become affiliates if they exceed 2 absences for the scholar circles, or if they exceed 2 absences for the study sessions, or if they exceed 1 absence for the monthly meetings.

Eligibility

  • Can be full time and part time students.
  • Must be an undergraduate student.
  • Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Students with a lower GPA can apply but must explain their situation. Applications are reviewed case by case, however.
  • Must be sure they can commit to the hours mentioned in the guidelines.
  • Must be willing to do research as a scholar. Mentors will guide scholars  and affiliates as to how to participate in research.
