Introduction to Laboratory Animal Science

This course will be an introduction to laboratory animal science and cover topics such as:

  • Overview of the beginning of the use of animals in biomedical research dating back to The Animal Care Panel.
  • W.M.S. Russell & R.L. Burch’s introduction of the 3 R’s, Replacement, Reduction, Refinement.
  • Humane care and use of animals in research
  • Common species used in lab animal research
  • Disease models of common species
  • Veterinary medicine in relation to the use of lab animals.
  • Behavior of selected (common) species
  • Enrichment requirements of lab animals
  • Common diseases of lab animals
  • Animal facility designs
  • IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee)
  • Protocol writing
  • Compliance, laws, and regulations
  • Associations affiliated with lab animal science (local AALAS, National AALAS, LAMA, LAWTE, AVMA, etc)
  • Animal disposition
  • Careers in the field of laboratory animal science
