About the Director

Michael P. Weinstein, Ph.D., was named Director of the newly created PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies in May, 2009. Prior to joining Montclair State’s College of Science and Mathematics, Dr. Weinstein was president of the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium and Director of the New Jersey Sea Grant College Program, an affiliation of colleges, universities and other groups dedicated to advancing knowledge and stewardship of New Jersey’s marine and coastal environment.

Dr. Weinstein has an international reputation for his work in sustainability and restoration science, and brings his vision, energy, expertise and transdisciplinary approach to Montclair State to help build Montclair State University's PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies. He holds a PhD in Marine and Environmental Science from Florida State University and has an outstanding record of scholarship that ranges from wetlands and restoration ecology, sustainability science and coastal management to invasive species ecology, larval fish transport, and physiology of fish.

Dr. Weinstein is also the recipient of numerous awards including Educator of the Year, Research & Development Council of New Jersey 2008, Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award, 2006Spirit Award, Coastal America 2005 and Environmental Quality Award, A Partnership for Learning, USEPA, Region II, 2000.

He has served in a variety of advisory appointments and roles including Science Advisor, State Oceanic Administration – Tianjin Municipal Government, Tianjin Binhai New Area (Bohai Base); US-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (UJNR)/Coastal Environmental Science & Technology Panel (CEST), Functional Restoration/Recovery of Coastal Ecosystems, Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, 17-19 July 2002; Audit Panel participant on the Singapore-Delft Water Alliance (SDWA); The National Academies, National Research Council, Steering Committee/Session Chair, Environmental Windows for Dredging Projects; National Academy of Science, Washington, DC; and the National Working Group, Development of a National Strategy for Coastal Habitat Restoration, Estuarine Habitat Restoration Act, implementation phase.
