Evaluation Issues

Synopsis

Students explore two evaluation issues that should be considered when determining the degree to which a risk management strategy worked; efficiency and offsetting effects.  Students realize the complexity and challenges of carrying out a cost-benefit analysis.  Students also realize that in spite of good intentions, a risk management strategy may create unintended consequences that must be considered when evaluating its effectiveness.

    Look For Students To:

    Realize that, given limited resources, implementing a risk management strategy that has been evaluated and found to be effective, may still not be appropriate.

    Describe the concepts of cost, efficiency, and offsetting effects.

    Provide a rationale for carrying out a cost-benefit analysis when evaluating the effectiveness of a risk management strategy.

    Provide a rationale for considering offsetting effects when evaluating the effectiveness of a risk management strategy.
