Dining Procedures

One of our main goals is to provide a pleasant, clean, comfortable and satisfying dining experience. In order to meet this goal, we ask for your assistance with the following procedures:

  • When finished dining, please bus your table by disposing of all trash and placing used dishes & utensils in the dish window.
  • Please refrain from taking food, dishes or utensils out of the dining halls.
  • Remember that Meal Plans are non-transferable. Meal Plans cannot be used by anyone but the cardholder.
  • Guest meals are for use at specified dining locations and available under our meal plans, except for Constant Meal Plans.
  • Meal Plans are stated as “constant pass/unlimited” or a number of blocks per semester. Unused meals/blocks do not transfer to other semesters.
  • Guest meals can be used for yourself or your guest, but the cardholder is required to be present with the guest.
  • Additional Block Meal Plans can be added at any time over the course of a semester; however additional individual blocks cannot be added.
  • Flex Dollars are for food purchases at any MSU dining hall, retail food operation, or university vending machine.
  • Flex Dollars carry over from Fall to Spring only.  Meals and Flex Dollars are to be used only by the individual who purchased the meal plan.   School policy prohibits the sharing of meal plans. Please respect this policy.
  • ID cards are the property of the University; and as such, the card cannot be used by anyone other than the cardholder.  ID cards found to be used by someone other than the cardholder will be confiscated.

Choosing Your Plan
Consider your daily routine...class schedule, study time, extracurricular and social activities and employment.  Select the Constant Pass or Block (Traditional) Meal Plan that is best for you.  One block is equal to one seating at the dining hall.  Each Residential Dining Hall is an “all-you-can-eat” environment.  With a single swipe, meal plan holders gain entrance to the dining hall.

Block Plans
1 block = 1 swipe = 1 entrance into any of the university Residential Dining Halls. Upon entering a dining hall, your MSU ID Card is swiped at the register and one block is removed. Any unused blocks will be forfeited at the end of each semester, i.e. “blocks do not roll over”.  Blocks can also be exchanged to equal $5.80 ($4.15 for breakfast) towards the purchase of food during meal equivalency hours at specific retail locations on campus.  The retail locations that accept “meal equivalency” are the Red Hawk Diner, Student Center Cafeteria, Café Diem and The Rathskeller.

Constant Pass
Constant Pass Plan customers have unlimited access to any Residential Dining Hall for all meals. Meal Equivalency is not available with the Constant Pass Plan.  The dining halls offer continuous service, i.e. the halls do not close between service (breakfast, lunch or dinner).

Flex Dollars
Flex Dollars are used just like cash to purchase food.  One Flex Dollar is equal to one cash dollar.  Most meal plans (Constant Pass and Block Plans) come with Flex Dollars.  Once enrolled in a meal plan, the plan together with the Flex Dollars are automatically added to the customer’s MSU ID card.  Flex Dollars are accepted at all Dining Service operations and campus vending machines.  If you run out of Flex Dollars before the end of the semester, you can purchase additional Flex Dollars ($50, $100, $250) or Red Hawk Dollars. Flex Dollars are tax freeAny unspent Flex Dollars automatically roll over from the Fall semester to the Spring semester as long as you have a meal plan in the Spring semester.  Balances at the end of Spring semester will be forfeited.  Unspent blocks are forfeited at the end of each semester. If you cancel your meal plan, any unspent Flex Dollars will be lost.

Red Hawk Dollars

Red Hawk Dollars may be added at any time for any amount. A Red Hawk Dollar account is an all-in-one debit card function of your MSU ID card; and it’s used for purchases at The University Bookstore, Sprague Library, the Rec Center and all Campus Dining Facilities. Red Hawk Dollars can be purchased at the Red Hawk Dollar Office located on the 1st floor of the Student Center or by visiting the Montclair State University Online Card Office.

Cash Equivalency
With block meal plans, your dining options are expanded to take advantage of the Student Center Cafeteria, Café Diem, the Rathskeller and the Red Hawk Diner.  During specific times, one block can equal $5.80 towards the purchase of food in the Student Center Cafeteria ($4.15 for Student Center breakfast), Café Diem, Rathskeller and the Red Hawk Diner.  If you purchase more than $5.80 worth, you can use another block (Student Center Café and The Rathskeller) and pay the difference in cash, Flex
or Red Hawk Dollars
