Categories of
Employment
Classified
Classified employees are governed primarily by the statutes, rules and
regulations of the New Jersey Department of Personnel and by the negotiated
agreements covering support staff, physical plant employees and University
police, depending on their titles. As employees of Montclair State University,
classified employees are also subject to the policies, rules, and regulations
promulgated by the Board of Trustees
and the administration of the University.
Unclassified
Professional staff, librarians, and faculty constitute the group of unclassified
employees who are represented by a collective negotiations unit. Therefore,
their terms and conditions of employment are governed by the statewide
negotiated agreement and they are also subject to the policies, rules
and regulations promulgated by the Board of Trustees and the administration
of the University.
Non-aligned, unclassified
staff are composed of managers who are governed solely by the policies,
rules, and regulations promulgated by the Board of Trustees, the administration
of the University and the State of New Jersey.
Full-Time/Part-Time
The University determines whether a position is full-time or part-time.
Part-time positions are defined as a percentage of full-time and employees
in this category are compensated on the basis of the proportion of hours
to full time that they work. They may also be entitled to some of the
benefits and covered by some of the provisions of relevant collectively
negotiated agreements and Civil Service rules,
if appropriate.
10-Month
The preponderance of non-faculty positions at the University are 12-month
positions. However, many of the unclassified titles provide for either
10- or 12-month positions. It is solely at the discretion of the University
whether to establish a position as a 10- or 12-month position. For 10-month
positions that occur from September 1 -June 30, applicable health, dental,
and life insurance benefits continue automatically through the summer
months during the period of employment. Salaries for 10-month positions
are three ranges lower than for analogous 12-month positions and benefits
for 10-month positions are prorated accordingly.
Classified
to Unclassified
When the position an employee holds is reclassified or the employee is
promoted out of a classified title to an unclassified title, the employee
is no longer entitled to the rights of a classified employee under New
Jersey Statutes Annotated 11 and New Jersey Administrative Code 4A.
