How to Buy a Permit

Permits can be purchased both online and in the office located on the first level of the Red Hawk Deck.  Purchases made in the office must be paid with cash or Red Hawk Dollars.  Students who wish to purchase a permit by using Discover, Amex, Mastercard or E-Check must do so online.  Please note that the Parking Office will direct all credit card payments towards the kiosks in the office for online payment. 

If paying online, please read the below step by step instructions:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (our system functions best Internet Explorer rather than Firefox or Chrome).
  2. Go to our website and select "Obtain a Permit"
  3. Login using your MSU NetID and password.  If you are not an MSU employee or student, you will not be able to purchase an MSU permit online.
  4. Select the permit that you wish to purchase. Please note, if the permit you wish to purchase is listed as “N/A”, it has not reached its sale date.
  5. Once you have selected the permit you wish to purchase, please select the vehicles you wish to attach the permit to.  If you need to add a new vehicle, select “Add a Vehicle” from the top right hand corner of the screen.  Please note: any individual who purchases a permit must register their proper vehicle information with the University.  It is the obligation of the permit holder to keep this information up to date.
  6. Review your shopping cart to make sure the permit and total amount is correct.
  7. Choose your payment method from the drop down menu on the View Cart page and click “Pay Now”.  You will receive one last chance to review your account.
  8. You will be re-directed to the University’s Sallie Mae payment website and asked to enter your personal information, payment information and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  9. Once your information is entered, please click “Submit” at the bottom of the page.  If you wish to cancel your transaction, please press “Cancel” at the bottom of the page.  Only click “Submit” once to allow for processing time and to avoid double charges.
  10. You will be re-directed back to your parking account where a receipt for your transaction will be displayed.

How to Pay a Citation

Citations can be paid both online and in the office located on the first level of the Red Hawk Deck.  Citations which are paid in the office must be paid with cash or Red Hawk Dollars.  Students who wish to pay their citation by using Discover, Amex, or Mastercard  must do so online.   Please note that the Parking Office will direct all credit card payments towards the kiosks in the office for online payment. Checks or E-Checks cannot be accepted for boot citations.

If paying online, please read the below step by step instructions:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (our system functions best Internet Explorer rather than Firefox or Chrome).
  2. Go to our website and select "Pay a Citation"
  3. Enter the information requested.
  4. Review your shopping cart to make sure the number of citations and total amount is correct.
  5. Choose your payment method from the drop down menu on the View Cart page and click “Pay Now”.  You will receive one last chance to review your account.
  6. You will be re-directed to the University’s Sallie Mae payment website and asked to enter your personal information, payment information and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
  7. Once your information is entered, please click “Submit” at the bottom of the page.  If you wish to cancel your transaction, please press “Cancel” at the bottom of the page.  Only click “Submit” once to allow for processing time and to avoid double charges.
  8. You will be re-directed back to your parking account where a receipt for your transaction will be displayed.

How to Appeal a Citation

All appeals must be completed online.  The Parking Office no longer accepts paper appeals.  If you wish to appeal a parking citation, please read the below step by step instructions:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (Flex functions best Internet Explorer rather than Firefox or Chrome).
  2. Go to our website and select "Appeal a Citation"
  3. Login using your NetID if you are a member of MSU. If you are a visitor, you can create a guest account.
  4. You will need to enter the citation number you wish to appeal, as well as the plate number and state that your vehicle is registered in.  Click “Search”.
  5. You must agree that you understand our parking rules and regulations in regards to appeals before moving forward.
  6. Once you have inputted your contact information, expanded on your reason for appealing or attached a file, click “Next”.
  7. An appeal receipt will be issued to you on the screen as well as to the email address you selected or added.

Review Your Account

If you would like to update your vehicle information, email address or other personal information, please following these steps.

  1. Open Internet Explorer (our system functions best Internet Explorer rather than Firefox or Chrome).
  2. Go to our website and select "Review Your Account"
  3. Login using your NetID if you are a member of MSU. If you are a visitor, you can create a guest account.
  4. Once logged in, select one of the first four (4) options and update the information as appropriate.
  5. Be sure to save any changes you make.

Payment Options

Check/Money Order

You may pay with a check online only using the e-check option. Checks that cannot be processed will be assessed a $60 fee. If paying with a personal check Montclair State University waits approximately two weeks before removing holds on transcripts or registration. (top)

E-Check Payment

We also accept payments via an e-check. Computer terminals are provided in the waiting area of the Parking Services Office for e-check payments. Payments returned for any reason will be assessed an additional fee*. If MSU receives any returned payments your account will be flagged and e-check will not be accepted as payment again. If paying with an e-check Montclair State University waits approximately 3 business days before removing any type of transcript or registration holds. Please note that the e-check only gives you the option to pay from your personal checking/savings accounts. Checks that are received as an advance payment using a credit card number/line of credit, mutual fund accounts, money market accounts,cashier checks can not be processed using the E-check payment option. Do not use the account number printed on your ATM card. (top)

Credit Card

The University does not directly accept credit cards for payment of student accounts, we have arranged with Sallie Mae to accept credit cards on our behalf. Sallie Mae accepts AMEX, MC and Discover – they do not accept VISA. Please note that there will be a non-refundable convenience fee of 2.65% of your total charge. Computer terminals are provided in the waiting area of the Parking Services Office for credit card payments. The convenience fee is always applied whether a computer is utilized in our office or elsewhere. Credit cards payments are accepted online only. Cashiers in the Parking Services Office do not process credit card transactions. (top)

Cash

You may pay with cash in person at the Parking Services Office on Level 1 of the Red Hawk Deck. There may be a convenience charge for not using the online system for your transactions. (top)

*Please note: There will be a $60 fee assessed for all returned/rejected e-check payments due to incorrect information i.e.; invalid account number, can not locate account, non-sufficient funds, stop payments, etc. Your payment may be posted to your MSU account initially, but if a transaction is submitted, and your bank cannot process for any of the above reasons, that payment is returned to us as "unpaid" your payment will be removed from your account as a result and a $60 fee will be assessed. Please double check your entries including your CWID to ensure they are entered correctly before submitting your payment. (top)

Red Hawk Dollars

Red Hawk Dollars are accepted for any in-office parking transactions, using your University ID Card.
