Here are four of the best ways you can help new employees become successful in your department:

  1. Give your employees clear instructions.
    Let them know exactly what you expect them to do, and what aspects of their daily tasks you consider to be most important and why. Remember that when an employee is not doing what he/she should be doing, it is often because the employee doesn't know how, or because he/she does not know what is expected.
  2. Give your employees frequent, direct, and candid feedback about what they are doing.
    Let them know regularly what you like and what they need to do differently in order to excel. Most employees appreciate knowing that their supervisor will be respectful, direct, and honest in giving them feedback.
  3. Take the time to recognize the achievements and successes of your employees.
    The importance of this cannot be emphasized enough! It is a fact that when a new employee does something particularly well and the supervisor takes the time to say “Nice job!” the employee’s motivation increases.
  4. Make sure your new employee understands how important it is for all of us to provide outstanding support for and service to our students and faculty.
    We know that it is the day-to-day, moment-by-moment interactions each of us have with faculty and students that reflect our University’s image and reputation. Encourage your employees to do their part in making sure our image is one of excellent service, friendliness, and hard work.

These four things will help your staff succeed. When your employees succeed, it makes you, the supervisor, look good too. The result is that your employees win, you win, and the University wins.
