Faculty often find themselves needing to refer students to services around the University. It’s therefore important to know the breadth of services that the University has available.
Academic
- Center for Academic Success and Tutoring (CAST) offers tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic coaching for time management and school-work-life balance.
- Center for Writing Excellence supports writers at every level.
- The Disability Resource Center assists students with disabilities in receiving accommodations to equalize access.
- Academic and Career Advising centers are provided by the colleges and schools. If students do not know how to reach their college/school adviser, send them to Red Hawk Central or the Graduate School.
- Library. Research help is available by appointment, chat, email, and through discipline-specific guides.
Administrative & Technical
- Red Hawk Central is the first stop for administrative questions. It is the home to Student Accounts, Financial Aid, and the Registrar. Live chat available.
- IT Service Desk directly at 973-655-7971 or itservicedesk@mail.montclair.edu for support with log-in, network access, email, and university software and hardware.
Well-being
- Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS): Students may experience issues that can impact learning or reduce the ability to participate in daily activities, including strained relationships, anxiety, stress, alcohol/drug problems, feeling down, health concerns, or unwanted sexual experiences. CAPS provides free short-term counseling, group therapy, and referrals that are confidential. Call CAPS at 973-655-5211. In a crisis after hours, select option “2” or University Police at 973-655-5222. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline offers 24/7 support at 800-273-8255.
- Office of the Dean of Students: Through intentional intervention and guidance, the Office of the Dean of Students collaborates with campus partners connecting students with appropriate services and ensuring the resolution of concerns that impact student academic and/or personal well-being.
- Case Manager: For housing, food, or other life concerns

- Red Hawk Pantry: for food security.
- The MSU Care website provides resources and connections to help students who are feeling alone, stressed, or afraid. Community members may report concerns about a student via a CARE Report Form.
- Sexual Violence Support The University is committed to a safe environment. If you share sexual misconduct information with instructors, your instructor is required to report this to the Title IX officer.

What you need to know about Academic Support and Academic Advising — Julie Mazur, Director of CAST, and Danielle Insalaco-Egan, Assistant Provost for Student Success, will present on tutoring and advising services and strategies they have implemented and continue to develop. Julie is the director of the largest tutoring department on campus, and Danielle is the Provost Office’s lead for all advising across all colleges and schools.
