Biography
Dr. Leah Tonnette Gaines is an interdisciplinary scholar and educator whose research and teaching bridge Africana Studies, Education, and Gender Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in African American and African Studies from Michigan State University, with a concentration in Urban Education. Dr. Gaines earned her Master’s degree in African American Studies and History from Morgan State University and completed her undergraduate studies at Towson University, where she majored in Psychology and minored in African American Studies. Her research interrogates structural inequities, Black resistance, and diasporic experiences, with published work addressing topics such as Afro Puerto Rican immersion programs, beauty politics, and sociolinguistics. Through her scholarship and service, Dr. Gaines demonstrates a deep commitment to equity, community engagement, and the transformative potential of education and high-impact practices.
