Theresa Salomon

Biography

Theresa Salomon leads the Baroque Ensemble, which explores music of the 17th and 18th centuries through the lens of historical performance practice. Students study style, phrasing, ornamentation and original source materials while performing sacred works, courtly dances, instrumental music and chamber cantatas. Baroque bows are available for string players. Most repertoire is performed on modern instruments at A 440, while students with a strong interest in early music may also explore period instruments at baroque pitch, A 415. The ensemble is open to string players, flutists, oboists, harpsichordists and singers, and culminates in a concert or recorded performance at the end of the semester.

Violinist Theresa Salomon has been praised by The New York Times for her “sizzling” interpretations, by The Washington Post as “virtuosic” and by the Frankfurter Allgemeine for performing “on the highest level.” She has appeared with leading early music ensembles and orchestras, including Ensemble Repast, Four Nations, ARTEK, REBEL, Trinity Wall Street, the American Classical Orchestra, Opera Lafayette, Clarion and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. Her festival appearances include the Boston Early Music Festival, Carmel Bach Festival, Connecticut Early Music Festival, Gulbenkian Festival, Prague Spring Festival and Ostrava Days for New Music.

Salomon studied violin in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria, developing her interest in historical performance practice while studying in the Netherlands during the early 1990s. She has performed throughout Europe, North and South America, Asia and Africa, with appearances in Norway, Brazil, Japan, Togo, Malawi and South Africa.

Equally committed to contemporary music, she has premiered numerous works, including a violin concerto performed live on the radio with the Janáček Philharmonic in Ostrava. Her recordings span repertoire from Rosenmüller to Xenakis and include several film soundtracks. Salomon is a member of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and curates and programs the Friends of Mozart chamber music series. She lives in New York City.
