Vanessa Nilsson

Biography

Vanessa Nilsson is an adjunct professor in the Animation & VFX department at Montclair State University, where she teaches courses including Experimental Animation, Collaboration Production, and Thesis I & II. Her teaching focuses on guiding students through the full animation pipeline, from concept development to final execution and encourages experimentation and the development of a strong personal voice. She's also and Adjunct Professor in the Animation program at William Paterson University where she teaches 3D animation, character animation, 3D modeling, storyboarding and graphic design. further expanding her commitment to animation education.

Outside of academia, Vanessa is the Creative Manager at Equipment Zone, where she leads all creative initiatives for the company. Her work bridges design, animation, and marketing—producing promotional videos, product demonstrations, and visual campaigns that communicate complex printing technologies through engaging, accessible storytelling.

Vanessa is also an independent filmmaker and creates short animated films. Her most recent animated short, A Polar Bear Story, has been screened at festivals nationally and internationally and has received multiple awards for its storytelling and visual impact.

Vanessa holds an MFA in Visual Arts with a concentration in 3D Animation from William Paterson University. Her academic and professional experience informs a teaching approach that blends technical skill-building with conceptual exploration.

In addition to her animation work, Vanessa is an avid fine artist specializing in oil painting as well as pyrography (wood burning). Her work often explores themes of nature, animals, and environmental awareness. She regularly exhibits in galleries and participates in art shows throughout the region.
