Study Abroad

Montclair State offers a variety of study abroad options for students wishing to participate in this program.  Students are encouraged to meet with the staff in the Global Education office early to determine which program is best for them.  Students are also encouraged to meet with Financial Aid and with their academic advisors to ensure a smooth transition.

Students should be aware that aid disburses during the first week of classes at Montclair State.  Depending on the parameters of your chosen study abroad program, you may have to pay out of pocket at first.  Aid will not be disbursed earlier for an individual student.  If you have a question regarding receiving a refund check or the timing of the refund process, please contact the Student Accounts office

Programs that you receive a bill at Montclair State are considered Exchange Programs.  If you are participating in an exchange program for either a semester or year-long, you will receive all aid that you are eligible to receive.  This aid may include:

  • Grants (Pell, NJ TAG, SEOG, EOF)
  • Montclair State Foundation Scholarships
  • Loans (Stafford, Parent PLUS, Perkins)

***If a student has a Montclair waiver, private loan or outside scholarship, you should contact your lender and/or grantor to inquire about the process of using these funds to study abroad.***

Summer and Short-term programs are programs that are shorter than the semester (Fall or Spring).  These programs take place during the summer or winter sessions.    The summer programs are eligibile for any leftover financial aid that a student did not use during the Fall or Spring semesters.  Students need to complete a summer loan form to be able to use these funds.  This form will be available in the Financial Aid office and online toward the end of March.  There are scholarships available to help assist with the balance for summer and short-term programs, please contact the Global Education office for more information.

Affiliated Programs are programs that are during either the fall and/or spring semester where a student is not billed through Montclair State but through either the program or another University.  These programs are not eligible for New Jersey state grants.  Eligible aid may include:

  • Grants(Pell, SEOG)
  • Loans (Stafford, Parent PLUS, Perkins)
