From its inception in 1981,
the basic philosophy of the program has been “balanced enrichment.” This
balance is created through enrollment by 4th through 11th graders registering
for one mathematics or science course, plus one course in the humanities.
The courses are high level (many at the college level) providing these
selected students with learning opportunities that are both challenging
and fulfilling.
Over the years, the Montclair
State University Gifted Program has grown in the number of courses offered,
the number of grade levels included and in the number of students enrolled.
During the first semester, 26 years ago, 77 students in grades 7-11 enrolled and
were offered only two courses (Logic and Etymology). In contrast, a total of
1,500 students registered for 200 courses in the 2006-2007 academic year! This
expansion included kindergartners through juniors in high
school who attended fall and spring weekends as well as the six week summer
camp program.
Courses have changed over the years and
now include a wide range of innovative technology offerings. Some of these are:
Physics and Technology, Robotics and Microelectronics, Build Your Own Computer,
Digital Photography and Introduction to Veterinary Medicine. Of course, the
traditional math, science and humanities courses such as Algebra, Chemistry and
Creative Writing are always being offered but with changes that reflect new
approaches and techniques.
Since 1981, MSU has served
more than 10,000 academically gifted students. They represent all of northern
New Jersey, every county in the state, as well as out-of-state students
from Philadelphia, Manhattan, Staten Island, Rockland and Westchester counties.
We are proud of our achievements and look forward to continuing service to all gifted students
in the future.
