Math Courses

1.  Math Skills for the SAT (SM01)

This course will be geared toward improving scores on the SAT math section.  Included in the course will be test-taking techniques and strategies with reinforcement units in arithmetic, algebra, problem solving, basic geometry and quantitative comparison.

2.  Advanced Algebra (SM02)

A challenging course for students who are experienced in algebra, topics covered will be preparation for the study of trigonometry and pre-calculus.  Students will learn about the system of complex numbers, to solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, and by using the quadratic formula to express equations in terms of their roots and to graph conics.

3.  Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry (SM03)

This advanced course will use the students’ understanding of algebraic techniques to develop concepts used in calculus, providing an intuitive foundation for future work.  Topics covered will include polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric functions.  Emphasis will be on developing a combination of strategies how to solve problems graphically, analytically and numerically.  Prerequisite:  A full year’s course in Algebra

4.  Genetics and Biotechnology (SS04)

Laboratory and classroom activities will introduce students in this course to the fields of genetics and biotechnology.  The course will offer an overview of biotechnology, genetics, molecular biology, and its applications.  The hands-on approach will give students the chance to manipulate DNA, transform bacteria, and perform gel electrophoresis.  In addition, societal issues, such as the risks and benefits of various techniques, decision=making models for bioethical issues and other pertinent issues, will be discussed.  This course in an excellent preparatory course for those contemplating the medical profession.

5. YES – Young Epidemiology Scholars (SS06) (Sunday only)

Students will actively investigate the science of public health by exploring patterns of disease and other health related issues that will profoundly affect their lives.  Developing the right question, collecting relevant data and analyzing it to answer the questions are basic skills that will help students succeed in any future endeavor.  Discover how students may consider entering the national – “Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Competition” for original student research which is designed to inspire talented students to conduct a research project that apply epidemiological methods of analysis to a health-related issue. 120 college scholarships are awarded each year.

Math Courses

1.  Verbal Skills for the SAT (SH04)

The SAT verbal test places greater emphasis on the reading comprehension and sentence completion sections of the test.  Success on the test, like success in school work, requires solid skills in critical reading and critical thinking.  This revised verbal SAT preparation course emphasizes those analytical language skills.  There is significant carry-over to all other subjects studied in school.

2.    Creative Writing (SH07)

Many great writers have probably been inspired by courses that tap into their ability to create original ideas.  In this course, students will be writing in various genres while applying the components of creativity.  Emphasis will be placed on developing strategies for creating ideas, infusing excitement in language usage and editing.

3.  Power Writing (SH08)

Become an effective and powerful writer! Gain techniques for developing and organizing your ideas for a target audience.  You will learn how to write for the new SAT, college application essays, persuasive essays, and biographical sketches –as well as learning how to revise and edit your work.  Increase your writing skills, gain confidence and get the results you need for success.

4.  Exploring Behavior Through Psychology (SH05)

In this course, we will explore the complex world of human behavior.  Our investigation will include conflict, group processes, individual differences, theories of personality, as well as, behavior disorders.  You will learn a great deal about yourself and others as we discuss a variety of psychological issues. (Available Saturday only)

5.  Principles of Journalism (SH02)

Prestigious universities know that students who study journalism have sharpened skills of observation, analysis and writing.  This course will provide hands-on experiences in writing for publication, as well as, other print and electronic media.  Students will learn about gathering new-worthy information, interviewing, feature and sports writing, and composing effective editorials and eye-catching headlines.  Computers will be utilized for implementing effective design and layout.  This course is ideal for students interested in writing for school publications or pursuing a career someday in the exciting field of journalism.

Double Period – Laboratory Courses – Grades 7 – 11 (Double Period – Period 1 & 2)

1. Let’s Make an I-Movie (CL08)

Using the latest in digital photography in computer labs, you will learn how to create your own music video, film you own comedy, thriller, soap opera or murder mystery.  You also will learn how to make a commercial or documentary while becoming the next Steven Spielberg! (Saturday Only) (Limited to 10 students)

2.  Web Page Development (CL06)

A “Hands-on” and theory course covering the design, development, and execution of a World Wide Web site on the Internet.  Topics covered include the use of an HTML, editor, FTP of files, file converters using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, use and development of links, graphics, buttons, rules, frames, and e-mail.  Students will develop an actual Web page for use on the Internet.

3.  Digital Photostorytelling (CL03)

Every picture has a story.  Don’t let yours go untold.  In this hands-on, highly creative, project-based course, students will develop a personal story concept, identify and digitize photos that visually tell the story, draft and record a narrative, add a soundtrack, edit and publish the story to DVD and the web.  (Sunday only)
