“We Make the American Dream Possible”: Greg Collins ’79 Helms New Leadership Giving Club
Greg Collins ’79 has a special place in his heart for his alma mater. “At Montclair State, we make the American dream possible for our students,” he says proudly. “What is more important than that?”
“Montclair State is part of my personal give-back,” he explains. “I benefitted from a lot of things the school offered me. I’ve had a successful career because of that. I stay involved with the school in any way that I can.”
Greg has nothing but positive things to say about his student days at Montclair State. “My student experience helped to make me a well-rounded individual,” he shares. “It helped me to deal with all kinds of people and situations, and learn about the importance of networking. My educational training in accounting at Montclair State was very valuable. The School of Business’s reputation helped me to get respect as I started my career. It gave me a good credential throughout the New York and New Jersey area. I also made many friendships that are still going strong.” Greg, a CPA, has a BS degree in accounting from the University.
He began his professional career with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as a student at Montclair State under the school’s innovative Co-Op Program. By his junior year he was working full-time at the IRS while going to school. “I was always involved in some way with Montclair State since I graduated,” he says. “I stayed connected with the Co-Op Department, and also spoke at the school on behalf of various professional organizations, including the New Jersey Society of CPAs.”
Greg is the founder and principal of G. Collins and Company, LLC in New York City. He has been a member of the Montclair State University Foundation Board of Trustees and the Alumni Association board since 2004. Now he has added serving as chairman of the President’s Club to his busy schedule. “President Cole asked me to be the chairman and I agreed,” he says. “Her tireless efforts have helped Montclair State to gain a reputation as one of the finest schools in New Jersey, and now recognized both nationally and internationally.”
“I’ve been contributing to the Annual Fund for at least 10 years,” he shares. “I want to help my fellow alumni understand that Montclair State needs and deserves their financial support. It provides a great education at a reasonable cost in spite of declining state funding. The President’s Club is an initiative for alumni who have benefitted from their experience at Montclair State and are in a position to contribute to the University as part of their annual charitable initiatives,” Greg explains. “We want to create a culture of giving at Montclair State and get people to recognize what the school has done for them and what it can do for others in the future. “
The President’s Club recognizes alumni, parents, and friends who show their pride in the University through leadership giving to the Annual Fund. President’s Club members will be recognized in the President’s Club Honor Roll, receive special communications about University news and events, and be invited to a special members-only reception. Montclair State’s Annual Fund supports scholarships for bright and talented students, new program development, and renovation of classrooms, laboratories, and other campus facilities.
Greg says that “I would urge my fellow alumni to come back to campus and see how the school has changed. Come to a show at Kasser Theater or go to a sporting event. The new Montclair State is not the same place that it was five, 10, or 25 years ago. The school has evolved and improved itself tremendously — including new buildings, curricula, specialty programs. They’ll agree that it deserves their support.”
“Montclair State has many first generation students — nearly 30 percent,” he adds. “We provide a Division I type of opportunity for our students to make something of themselves. We don’t have Division I sports, but we offer a chance for students to get a great education and transform their lives.”
Greg has over 25 years of experience in providing tax preparation and planning services to high-income individuals and small businesses. His clients include several major entertainers, record labels, production companies and closely held businesses. He has significant expertise in representing clients in Internal Revenue Service matters including examinations, resolving collection issues and other related matters. He also is a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants, the AICPA, and the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA).
