Frequently Asked Questions

I.    General Questions:


     1. What is the difference between “Teaching in English” and “Teaching English”?
     The Teaching in English program is specially designed to teach international faculty how to teach their subject areas in English. In other words, how to use English as a medium for teaching and learning. In order for instructors whose native language is not English to deliver their lectures, conduct classroom discussions, encourage interaction, arrange course readings, evaluate written examinations and assignments, they need essential English language skills and methodology. The fundamental purpose of this program is not to train international faculty how to teach English, but how to use English throughout the teaching-learning process.                                                                              
     2. Who is the faculty team? Are they all professors from Montclair State University?
     The instructors for the program are carefully selected Montclair State University professors who are excellent instructors in their disciplines and possess rich professional experience in international faculty training. In addition, some professors from other universities are specially invited to be instructors for the program because of their expertise in particular academic areas and excellence in teaching and faculty training.    

II.    Curriculum Design


     1. How do you adjust the course to match different English levels of the participants?
     Each course is designed in full consideration of participants’ (i.e., students’) different levels of English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. If necessary, a course can be designed to accommodate, in the same classroom, groups of participants at various levels of English proficiency.  If a particular class has participants at various levels of English proficiency, the instructor will keep a reasonable balance to promote interactive and cooperative learning.     

     2. How do you adjust the course to different academic disciplines of the students?
     The program and each course of study are designed for international faculty from various academic disciplines, covering disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, business, arts, natural sciences, and applied sciences. In full consideration of participants’ various disciplines, the instructors for the program are selected from various major disciplines, not to teach their subject but to train the participants how to use English as their educational medium. The courses, including teaching materials, are designed to meet participants’ particular interests and needs.    
 
     3. In addition to the courses currently offered by the program, can other courses be offered?
     Yes. We will take into full consideration your faculty’s special interests and needs and design particular course(s) for them. Please let us know if your faculty has any special needs or interests that are not listed in our program description.


III.    Program Requirements


     1. Do prospective candidates need to submit TOFEL or IELTS scores as application materials?
     No such test scores are mandatory for admission to this program though an English proficiency level comparable to a TOFEL213 computer/550 written/80 internet or IELTS 6.5 score is required.

     2. Does each course require a textbook and/or reading material?
     Yes. Each instructor for the program will provide a course packet (i.e., reading materials). For the on-site program, the participating university will be responsible for producing copies for the participants.  For the at Montclair State University program, Montclair State will provide the course packet for the participants. The course packet will also be available online.  

     3. Because some participants will be too busy to take all the courses for the program, can they take only one or two courses in order to receive the Certificate of Completion?
     No. Each participant must take and complete all the courses required for the certificate. Participants must make themselves available for the courses they take throughout the program.

     4. Can some of our faculty audit a particular class with no intention to complete all the courses as required for the certificate?
     No. Your faculty members interested in any course must be enrolled in the program as full-time participants.  

     5. Can enrolled participants drop the program at a certain point due to personal reason, for example the participants have family emergency and need to be away for a month?
     Yes. But even if they do have good reasons, they will not be qualified for the Certificate of Completion.

     6. If participants are not able to attend all the non-class-required round-table conferences or lectures for whatever reason, can they still be issued the Certificate of Completion?
     Yes. Such participants still can be issued the Certificate of Completion if they successfully complete all the course requirements.

     7. How many absences from a class(s) are allowed?
     There is no specific policy about class attendance, but if too many or frequent absences from a class affect the participant’s sequential learning or academic progress, the participant may fail to complete a particular course. Consequently, the participant may not be issued the Certificate of Completion. The academic director will make the decision.

IV.    Classroom Experience


     1. For whatever reason, can participants drop one course to take another instead?
     Yes. But such participants must make any necessary adjustment during the first day or two of the program. Any adjustment must be approved by the academic director of the program.

     2. While in the program, how can participants get individual help and/or assistance from their instructors?
     Each instructor for the program will keep his/her regular 2 office hours per week throughout the program. Participants are encouraged to meet with their instructor(s) during his/her office hours to discuss course work or seek assistance. The instructors can be arranged to meet with their students beyond their office hours by appointment.

     3. If the same course is offered to two classes of participants at two different levels of English proficiency, are participants allowed to move from one class to another?
     Yes. If participants decide to move from one class to another for better learning results, they need the approval of the instructor who teaches the course they wish to enter.

V.    Program Outcomes


     1. Do participants receive certificates upon completion of the program?
     Montclair State University will issue an official “Certificate of Completion” to each participant who successfully completes the courses of study as required by the program.

     2. Can the program help me participate at an international academic conference?
     One of the objectives of the advanced English writing course is to help participants improve and strengthen their writing skills for teaching and research purposes, including writing skills for presentations at international conferences.

     3. Can this program help me publish my articles in international journals?
     One of the major objectives of the advanced writing courses, one for participants from the humanities, business and the social sciences, and the other for those from the natural and applied sciences, is to familiarize them with publication standards and formats in different disciplines and to teach them how to write academic papers in formats and styles common to English scholarly publications.
