Tuition and Visa Types

Students on most non-immigrant visa types including F-1 and J-1 visas must pay out-of-state non-resident tuition. In rare cases, students in some visa types are allowed to pay in-state resident tuition if they have lived in NJ for one year or more. The following chart lists some visa categories and whether or not a student at Montclair State University in a certain visa category will pay out-of-state non-resident tuition or in-state resident tuition.

Visa Waiver Program - Individuals can
enter the U.S. for 90 days from Visa
Waiver Countries without a visa.

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

Considered like a B-1/B-2 visa. Individuals can receive an honorarium and reimbursement for incidental expenses.

E-1, E-2, E-3
Treaty traders, spouse, and children

 

In-state tuition (if living in NJ for one year or more)

 

Principal E-1 or E-2 may engage in incidental study while maintaining valid E status. Dependents of E nonimmigrant may engage in part- or full-time study.

F-1
International student

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

Must maintain full-time enrollment as defined by academic institution; part-time study only with approval of Designated School Official in accordance with regulations.

F-2
Dependents of international students

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

F-2 spouses may not engage in full-time study; F-2 children may only engage in full time study at the K-12 level. Part-time study that is vocational or recreational in nature is permitted. F-2 may not begin a course of study until a change to F-1, M-1, or J-1 status is approved.

G-1, G-2, G-3, G-4
Representative of an international organization, spouse, and children.

 

In-state tuition (if living in NJ for one year or more)

 

Principal G nonimmigrant may engage in incidental study while maintaining valid G status. G dependents may engage in part- or full-time study.

G-5
Personal employee of G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-4 visa older. Individuals in the U.S.as personal employees of a
representative of an international organization

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

May engage in incidental study while maintaining valid G-5 status

H-1B
Temporary Professional Worker

 

In-state tuition (if living in NJ for one year or more)

 

May engage in incidental study while maintaining valid H-1B status

H-1C, H-12A,B, H-3
Registered Nurse serving in underserved area. Temporary Agricultural Workers. Temporary workers whose skills are needed in the U.S. Trainees or participants in a special education exchange program.

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

H-1B1: professionals under the Singapore and Chile Free Trade Agreements.
H-1C: Registered nurses working in health professional shortage areas.
H-2A and H-2B: Performing temporarily agricultural work or seasonal or temporary work for which a shortage of U.S. workers exists.
H-3: Individual participating in a training program provided by a specific employer.

H-4
Dependent of H Visa Holder

 

In-state tuition (if living in NJ for one year or more)

 

May engage in full- or part-time study.

J-1 Student
Students in the U.S. under Exchange
Visitor Program

Out-of-state Tuition

Must maintain full-time enrollment.

J-1 Scholar
Researcher/Professor under Exchange Visitor Program

May engage in incidental study while maintaining valid J status.

J-1 Au Pair
Individuals in the U.S. under the auspices of the U.S. Information Agency and the Designated Program Sponsor.

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

May enroll in “postsecondary institutions” while maintaining J-1 status as an au pair, as required by J au pair regulations.

J-2
Dependents of J-1 visa holder

 

Out-of-state Tuition

 

May engage in full- or part-time study.

L-1
Intra-company transfers, i.e., managers or executives who have worked abroad for branch of U.S. firm.

 

In-state tuition (if living in NJ for one year or more)

 

L-1 may engage in incidental study while maintaining valid L-1 status.

L-2
Dependents of L-1 visa holder
