IS will handle immigration matters for you once your request has been approved by Dr. Marina Cunningham, Executive Director of Global Education Center.
NOTE: The spouse and unmarried minor children (under 21 years of age) of the J-1 exchange visitor are eligible for J-2 dependent status. J-2 dependents are eligible to apply for employment authorization from the USCIS as long as the employment is not for the purpose of supporting the J-1.
DOS English Proficiency requirement and J-1 Status
U.S. Department of State regulations require that all J-1 Students and Scholars establish English language proficiency. Accordingly, J-1 Students and Scholars are required to prove English proficiency in one of the following ways:
1) Submission of TOEFL exam scores of 80 for undergraduate students, 83 for graduate students and scholars;
2) Satisfactory completion of a Skype interview with the Executive Director of Global Education and a faculty mentor or an MSU Dean;
3) Completion of an ESL program, or a degree from an English-speaking university; or
4) An alternative method deemed to be acceptable by Global Education.
