This panel examines several key issues in contemporary Chinese politics and society, and includes Andrew Nathan (Political Science, Columbia University) on current issues in human rights; Guobin Yang (Sociology, Barnard College, Columbia University) on new media; Michael Santoro (Business Environment, Rutgers University) on ethics and foreign investment; and Barry Friedman (Vice President Corporate Affairs, Wal-mart China and former Minister of Commerce, US Embassy, Beijing) on conducting business in China.

A panel of Lening Liu (East Asian Languages and Cultures, Columbia University), Yahui Olenik (Linguistics, Montclair State University) and Ken Olenik (History, Montclair State University) examine some contemporary phenomena of Chinese language use, the writing system and language teaching.

Lecture/Tasting: Chinese Cuisine and History

Eileen Yin Fei Lo, (Renowned educator, chef and author of 11 cookbooks on Chinese cuisine) will discuss the history of Chinese cuisine and its reinterpretation in America. Montclair State University Food Management students will prepare Chinese dishes with Ms. Lo at the Montclair State University state-of-the-art kitchen.

Montclair State University's annual World Fair includes calligraphy, sumi-e, abacus, crafts, food, mahjong, local Chinese choirs, dance groups and traditional musicians.

Concert: Montclair State University Symphony Orchestra
Guest solois Weigang Li of Shanghai Quartet. Conducted by Paul Hostetter, the concert features the Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto, which became popular after the Cultural Revolution, and has become an embodiment of China in transition. $15. (Free for MSU Students with Student I.D.)

Concert: Shanghai Quartet

Specail guest renowned jazz bassist Christian McBride, double bass, joins the Shanghai Quartet in an eclectic program that includes selections from ChinaSong, a piece that celebrates the group's rich Chinese heritage. $15.

Panel: Environmental Sustainability in China and the United States
Lizhong Yu (President, East China Normal University), Dekui Yuan (Tianjin University) and Montclair State University environmental scientists will discuss China's growing environmental issues related to urban economic development and international collaborative responses.
The Environmental Studies panel has been canceled due to speaker scheduling and visa issues
