Jeffrey C. Kinkley specializes in the intellectual, social, and literary history of 20th C. China. His publications include biography
(The Odyssey of Shen Congwen,), translations of Chinese autobiography (Hsiao Ch'ien, Traveler Without a Map, Chen Xuezhao, Surviving the Storm,  Chinese Writers: Self Portrayals), studies of Chinese crime fiction and the history of Chinese legal culture (Chinese Justice, the Fiction: Law and Literature in Modern China,; Escape from the Law), and studies of Chinese oral fiction, concentration camp literature, and other crossovers of literature and history. He has published numerous literary studies and translations of Chinese literature of the early 20th C. and contemporary China and Taiwan.

Da Chen grew up in south China as the grandson of a disgraced landowner, during the Cultural Revolution. He excelled in college at Beijing Languages and Culture University, and stayed on as a professor of English. Da arrived in America at the age of 23 with $30 in his pocket and attended Columbia University School of Law on a full scholarship, and later worked for a Wall Street investment banking firm. Colors of the Mountain, his first memoir, was compared to Angela’s Ashes, and went on to become a New York Times bestseller. Published in six languages, the memoir won numerous awards. This was followed by China’s Son, a children’s adaptation of his memoir and Sounds of the River, Wandering Warrior, and his first adult fiction, Brothers.

As part of an on-going series on the world’s cuisines, this workshop will discuss the history, preparation and culture of Chinese dumplings. It will feature a hands-on demonstration and tastings for attendees, with dumplings prepared by the Food Management students under the direction of Montclair State University faculty and visiting scholars.
