Exhibition The Enduring Art of China

Co-curated by Zhiyuan Cong (Professor of Art, William Paterson University) and Teresa Rodriguez (Director, Montclair State University Georege Segal Gallery) the exhibit will feature 50 scrolls by eight leading artists from China, showcasing current renditions in traditional materials - ink, brush and rice paper. The Gallery is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and Thursdays 12:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Segal Gallery is closed Sundays, Mondays, and all major holidays.

Chuang Peng, (Mathematics, Morehouse College) will give an overview of Chinese contributions to mathematics over 1500 years, with wide applications to many fields, including land surveying, astronomy, trade and taxation.

Concert: Music From China Ensemble
Founded in 1984, this New York-based ensemble performs works that extend the Chinese music and instruments beyond traditional boundaries.

Workshop: Calculations with Chinese Abacus

This workshop by accountant Hanping Yu and mathematics professor Aihua Li will include an introduction to the history of Chinese abacus. Participants will perform simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication calculations, with a competition between Ms. Yu on abacus and participants utilizing calculators or computers.

Co-sponsored by the Mathematics Department and the student math club.

Seminar: Rhapsody in Red: How Western Classical Music Became Chinese
Jindong Cai (Stanford University, Director of Orchestral Studies and a guest conductor in China), Sheila Melvin (journalist and author), and Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin (flutist and editor) discuss the history of classical music in China.

Concert: Chinese and Chinese-Influenced Music
Cali school students and faculty, along with guest flutist Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin, perform Chinese-influenced music by both Chinese and Western composers.

Concert: Huaxia Chinese Chorus
Huaxia Chinese Chorus will present a concert at Montclair State University as part of Montclair State University’s Chinese Festival of Arts and Humanities 2010.  Featuring traditional Chinese choral music by Huaxia Chorus,  and invited guest artists Ying Huang, Qian Qin, Wei Tan, Peitang Wang, Weizhong Lu, Binuo Chen, Xinqiu Yao, Yi Zhou, as well as Zhiying Chorus.  The program includes traditional Chinese choral music, solos, instrumental music, and Peking Opera.

$10, $15 and $45. (Free for MSU students with Student I.D.)
