Montclair in London,Stratford and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Program Overview

This study tour provides an in-depth introduction to contemporary and classical British theatre for students, teachers, and theatre lovers. Participants attend performances of classical and contemporary plays in Britain’s most exciting theatrical venues. In meeting the creative collaborators who make the productions happen, participants gain an insider's view as they examine the traditions and practices that shape theatrical performance today.

Faculty

Susan Kerner is a professor in the Theatre and Dance Department of Montclair State University. She has directed London theatre programs for New York University, Drew University and Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. A professional stage director, Ms. Kerner has directed plays in regional, New York and London theatres.

Guest lecturers:

A wide range of highly regarded theatre professionals including playwrights, actors, directors, and designers conduct discussions and workshops at the Globe, Royal National Theatre, and Royal Shakespeare Company. Participants also hear perspectives on production from scholars, historians, and critics.

STUDENTS
:

All students must register with MSU Summer Sessions for three credits.
Non-students who wish to register for credit may do so as summer session non-degree graduate students.  The course includes three class meetings at MSU prior to the trip and an exam session afterwards. The following undergraduate and graduate courses in Theatre will be offered:

NON-STUDENTS
:

Non-students who do not register for credit will be required to pay an administrative fee of $100.

 
 

Accommodations and Meals

Students residence halls option:  In London, the residence hall has double rooms with private bathrooms. In Edinburgh, the residence hall is single rooms with shared bath.
Hotel option: Double rooms in pre-arranged 3-star hotels in London and Edinburgh, at additional cost noted below. Breakfasts are included throughout, and two group dinners are included. In Stratford, all participants are in a Bed-and-Breakfast. Breakfasts are included throughout the program, and two group dinners are included.

The program cost includes: 

Roundtrip airfare: Newark/London/Edinburgh/Newark

Train fare: London/Stratford/Edinburgh

All transfers in England and Scotland

10 days accommodations in a dormitory or hotel—double occupancy (London and Edinburgh)

2 days accommodations in a bed-and-breakfast—double occupancy (Stratford);

Breakfast daily; 2 group dinners

Theatre tickets for approximately 10 performances;

Guest lectures, workshops and guided tours as per itinerary

Sightseeing and admission fees, as per itinerary

Students should note that the program cost does not include tuition and fees for three credits.

The following items are not included: transportation to and from Newark Airport, lunches and dinners, gratuities, items of a personal nature. A single room in the London dorm is available for an additional $200. Prices are based on 20 paying participants and are subject to change because of smaller group or exchange rate fluctuations.
