Resources for Addressing Graduate Student Concerns

We all want our graduate school experience to be crisis-free, but sometimes issues come up that need to be addressed. Should you encounter a problem and need help resolving it, there are resources and appropriate ways of seeking resolution.

Academic

If the issue is of an academic nature, the first* step would be to contact the faculty member that is related to the particular issue. If, for any reason, this interaction does not effectively address your concern then your next step would be to speak with the Department Chair. If this attempt still leaves you unsatisfied, the next step is to contact the College/School Dean. You would finally contact the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services staff, who would determine whether you would be best served by being referred to the Provost, Dean of Students (grade grievance, discipline, plagiarism, post deadline withdrawal) or the Mediation Center.

Non-Academic

If your concern is not academically related, start by contacting the Individual Administrator (i.e., housing, parking, etc.). From there you should seek the Department Manager. If, after trying those resources, you still feel the need to pursue your efforts then, contact the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services*. Representatives of this office can then work with you to determine your next steps and determine whether you would be best served by being referred to Senior Administration (Vice Presidents, University Committees, etc.,) the Dean of Students (grade grievance, discipline, plagiarism, post deadline withdrawal,) the Mediation Center or Ombudsperson.

*If there is a concern for anonymity, the student or students may first contact the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services for advisement.
