Register for the Spring 2013 Graduate Development Conference:
This conference, sponsored by The
Graduate School in collaboration with the faculty from all five of the colleges
and schools at Montclair State University, provides students with workshop
sessions that cover topics specifically for academic and professional
development. The conference was developed in response to numerous suggestions
from graduate faculty and graduate students alike and from feedback from last
year's development conference. Please register for one session per time slot.

- Powerpoint for Beginners
Microsoft PowerPoint provides a user-friendly interface for many types of presentations. This session will introduce many of the program's basic functions, such as creating a new presentation, entering text or content on a slide, formatting, the Quick Access Toolbar and slide transitions.
- Research at the Graduate Level
The demands of graduate-level study vary greatly from most undergraduate programs. This session will provide insight regarding best practices for engaging in and producing graduate-level research with the help of the tools and resources at MSU.
- Excel for Beginners
Microsoft Excel can be a daunting program for the inexperienced user.
Learn the basics of Excel including the functions found on the home
screen, entering values, using simple formulas, creating tables and
charts, the ins and outs of the Quick Access Toolbar, and more
- Finding a Job in a Tough Economy
Finding a job in a tough economy; why not be as prepared as possible for your search? Learn about Career Counseling and how The Center for Career Services and Cooperative Education can help you! The resources explored will help you more effectively search and apply for jobs, internships, and take advantage of your time spent as a graduate student here at Montclair State University.

- Powerpoint for Non-Beginners
If used to its full potential, Microsoft PowerPoint can be a powerful tool for presentations. This session provides a refresher regarding the fundamentals of PowerPoint as well as other topics including keyboard shortcuts, formatting, the outline pane, drawing and graphics, delivery, transitions and animation, and more.
- Public Speaking: Tips and Techniques
Regardless of industry, most careers require strong communication skills. Strong presentation skills can also serve you well as a graduate student. Whether you are comfortable with public speaking or terrified by the concept, it's important to understand that everyone has room for improvement. The goal of this session is to help you recognize your individual public speaking flaws and teach you how to overcome them.

- Excel for Non-Beginners
For the more experienced user who is looking to maximize Excel's potential, this session will help to broaden your knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Topics covered include, but are not limited to, relative and absolute referencing, functions, sorting, filtering, charting, pivot tables, and more.
- MLA Writing Style
MLA (Modern Language Association) Writing Style is used by a number of disciplines in the humanities, particularly in literature, modern language, philosophy, and art. This session will provide you with basic information for composing essays/papers/manuscripts that align with the requirements and regulations that are outlined in the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers.
- Time and Life Balance: Tools for Success in Graduate School
The transition into graduate school can be jolting. This session will explore methods for managing your schedule, as well as any stress that may come along with your new endeavor! Learn what the physical, psychological and behavioral signs of stress are and how to address them in a proactive way. Participants will be encouraged to think about long-term and short-term goal setting strategies that produce creative and effective life schedules.
- Chicago Writing Style
CMS (Chicago Manual of Style) Writing Style is used in both the humanities and the social sciences, as well as in book publishing for many fields. This session will provide you with basic information for composing essays/papers/manuscripts that align with the requirements and regulations that are outlined in The Chicago Manual of Style.
