1. Program Objective

The program's objective is to serve previously certified teachers who are currently teaching health education in a classroom setting and want to continue their education.  The courses have been chosen to provide pedagogical and content-based knowledge and skills grounded in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health. For classroom teachers whose primary focus is not health, as well as those for whom it is, furthering their knowledge and skill base in health education based on the most current research and theories in the field expands the expertise they share with their students. Additionally, it increases their abilities to meet the mandated standards that are part of the state's standardized tests in the elementary, middle and high schools.

2. The Academic Program

The program consists of twelve-credit hours of graduate courses.  It can be completed in one year (two semesters). The course requirements are listed below:

a) Choose one of the following:

HLTH 510 Health Education Workshop (3 cr.)
HLTH 520 Foundations and Methods of Health Education (3 cr.)
HLTH 526 Curriculum Development in Health Education (3 cr.)

b) Choose three of the following:

HLTH 502 Determinants of Environmental Health (3 cr.)
HLTH 511 Biomedical Psychosocial Perspectives on Drugs (3 cr.)
HLTH 530 Health Issues Seminar (3 cr.)
HLTH 540 Selected Topics in Mental Health (3 cr.)
HLTH 560 Human Diseases (3 cr.)
HLTH 565 Foundations of Epidemiology (3 cr.)
HLTH 575 The Teaching of Human Sexuality (3 cr.)

3. Faculty

The Montclair State University health education faculty teaches these courses.

ADMISSION

To be admitted to the Health Education Certificate Program the applicant must possess; (A) A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4-point scale or equivalent on a 5-point scale; and (B) a teaching certificate.

All candidates must meet the basic admissions requirements for graduate study at Montclair State.  Candidates with degrees in closely related areas will be considered, although prematriculation coursework may be required.

***Students who successfully complete the requirements of the certificate program with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and receive the Health Education Certificate, will have the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) application requirement waived if they apply to the MA in Health Education program.


DEADLINES

Credentials are processed as soon as they are received.  This program does not have a specific deadline; however the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services recommends that students submit their credentials as far in advance as possible for the semester they plan to begin their studies to ensure a timely review of their application.

Pre-matriculation

The Montclair State University Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services accepts applications on a rolling basis for the Health Education Certificate. Individuals who wish to pursue the MA in Health Education may take up two of the required courses (6 credits) before applying to the program if they meet requirements for PreAdmit or General Nondegree status as defined by the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services.
