Human Sexuality Education

1. Program Objective
The program's objective is to serve previously certified teachers who are currently teaching health education in a classroom setting as well as community health educators who want to further their education and skills specifically in the area of human sexuality. The courses have been chosen to provide knowledge based on the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Comprehensive Health, specifically Standard 2.4: Human Relationships and Sexuality.
2. Academic Program
The program consists of twelve-credit hours of graduate courses. It can be completed in one year (two semesters).
The course requirements are listed below:
a). Required:
HLTH 575 Teaching of Human Sexuality (3 cr.)
HLTH 592 Controversies in Sexuality Education (3 cr.)
b). Choose one of the following:
HLTH 526 Curriculum Development and Program Planning in Health Education (3 cr.)
HLTH 520 Foundations and Methods of Health Education
c). Choose one of the following:
FCST 512 Child Development (3 cr.)
FCST 518 Families, Communities and Schools (3 cr.)
ELRS 580 Learning: Process and Measurement (3 cr.)
PSYC 563 Theories of Learning (3 cr.)
PSYC 582 Behavior Modification (3 cr.)
3. Faculty
The Montclair State University health education faculty teaches these courses.
ADMISSION
To be admitted to the Sexuality Education Certificate Program the applicant must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4-point scale or equivalent on a 5-point scale.
All candidates must meet the basic admissions requirements for graduate study at Montclair State. Candidates with degrees in closely related areas will be considered, although prematriculation coursework may be required
***Students who successfully complete the requirements of the certificate program with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and receive the Human Sexuality Education Certificate, will have the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) application requirement waived if they apply to the MA in Health Education program.
DEADLINES
Credentials are processed as soon as they are received. This program does not have a specific deadline; however, the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services recommends that students submit their credentials as far in advance as possible for the semester they plan to begin their studies to ensure a timely review of their application.
Pre-matriculation
The Montclair State University Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services accepts applications on a rolling basis for the Human Sexuality Education Certificate. Individuals who wish to pursue the MA in Health Education may take up two of the required courses (6 credits) before applying to the program if they meet requirements for PreAdmit or General Nondegree status as defined by the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services.
