The Speech Language Specialist program in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders provides instruction for professionals who wish to fulfill the academic requirements for New Jersey State certification as a public school Speech Language Specialist. Candidates for certification must take the courses listed below at Montclair State University or provide official transcripts, including those from other colleges; to document that equivalent courses have been completed.  This program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech Language Hearing Association and the Council for Exceptional Children.

REQUIREMENTS

Students seeking certification as a Speech Language Specialist must have a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology.  Students may complete the requirements for the certification program in conjunction with the Master's program in Communication Sciences Disorders.  Students who wish to apply to Montclair State University must complete the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services Admissions application and submit official transcripts from each college or university attended, along with a brief statement of professional objectives.

CURR 528, Teaching for Learning (*)
CURR 416, Supervised Student Teaching for Speech Language Specialist Students (*)
CURR 502, Graduate Seminar in Professional Education (*)

*Please note that courses marked with an asterisk must be taken in the same semester.

ADMISSION

All candidates must meet the basic admissions requirements for graduate study at Montclair State.  The completion of a major from an accredited college or university is preferred.  Candidates with degrees in closely related areas will be considered, although prematriculation coursework may be required.

DEADLINES

Credentials are processed as soon as they are received.  This program does not have a specific deadline; however, the Office of Graduate Admissions & Support Services recommends that students submit their credentials as far in advance as possible for the semester they plan to begin their studies to ensure a timely review of their application.
