1. Who are the students in Montclair State University's Ed.D. program?

Montclair's Ed.D. students are educators who aspire to be models of teaching excellence, leaders among their colleagues and spokespersons for education in their setting. Our students are teacher leaders from local school districts as well as from places as far away as Iceland, Brazil, Nigeria and Indonesia.

2. Can I be in the Ed.D. program and still be a full-time teacher?

Our Ed.D. program is sensitive to the needs of classroom teaches and offers a part-time program that allows doctoral students to complete their coursework at night and during the summer.

3. How long will it take to complete the program?

Students in the full-time program may be able to complete their course requirements in three years. Part-time students may be able to complete their coursework in four years. However, in addition to coursework, students need to complete a qualifying assessment and a dissertation. The amount of time necessary to complete these depends on the student.

4. Can I register for individual courses at the doctoral level before matriculating?

Required courses within the doctoral program are restricted to students who are officially matriculated into the program. Permission to register for elective courses within the doctoral program may be granted by the Program Director.

5. Does my Master's degree qualify me for the program in Philosophy for Children?

Because of the specialized nature of the Philosophy for Children program, students must have a strong background in Philosophy, or Philosophy for Children. Ed.D. applicants who have already taken some graduate level courses in either of these two areas and are interested in the Philosophy for Children program should contact Dr. Megan Laverty about the possibility of completing a bridge program at Montclair State that will make them eligible for application to the Ed.D. program. (Please note that completion of the bridge program does not guarantee admission to the Ed.D.)

6. Do you offer specializations in any other areas besides Mathematics Education and Philosophy for Children?

While these are only two specializations currently being offered, we do expect to expand our program in the future years. Specializations being considered include Language, Culture, and Literacy; and School Renewal.

7. After being accepted into the program when do I begin taking classes?

Students are expected to begin coursework in the summer with the rest of the cohort.

8. Can I transfer in credits from other programs?

Up to a third of the required semester hours for the program may be transferred into the doctoral program from Montclair State University or another accredited university, pending approval by a Graduate Program Coordinator and the program director. Credits are limited to graduate level courses with grades of B or better, taken no more than five years before the date of doctoral matriculation at Montclair State.
