I.
Professional Core Courses (12 semester hours)
Core courses are to be completed within the first four semesters:
COUN 552: Introduction to Professional and
Ethical Issues in Counseling*, 3

COUN 577, Counseling Theories*, 3 credits
ELRS 503, Methods of Research*, 3 credits
COUN 579: Appraisal of the
Individual, 3 credits
COUN 582: Career Counseling, 3 credits
COUN 584: Group Counseling: Theories and Practice, 3
credits
COUN 588, Techniques of Interviewing and Counseling, 3 credits
COUN 595, Multicultural Counseling, 3 credits
COUN 652: Introduction to Marriage, Couples, and
Family Counseling, 3 credits
COUN 531: Counseling Across
the Lifespan, 3 credits
or
COUN 532: Counseling Child and Adolescents, 3
credits
or
COUN 561: Developmental Psychology, 3 credits
*May be taken by pre-admit
and non-degree students. A maximum of 2
courses (6 credits) may be taken.
II. Practicum (COUN 624)
All students will be
required to complete a 100-hour practicum in
counseling course. IN addition to a specified
prerequisites and co-requisites, students must have
a maximum GPA of 3.00 and a minimum grade of B in
COUN 588 to enroll in COUN 624.
Required courses will be determined with the advisement of the program coordinator.
III. Specialization Requirements and Electives

Counseling in Higher Education
- Addictions Counseling
IV. Internship (COUN 654 & COUN 674)
All students will be
required to complete a 600-hour internship (300
hours during each semester's course) in their area
of specialization at the end of their program.
Students must meet the following requirements prior
to being granted permission to enroll in internship:
- a minimum GPA of 3.00 and
must be in good standing in the Counseling
Program,
- successful completion of
33 credits including COUN 552, 557, 584,
588, 595, 624, and at least one of the required
courses in specialization area,
- minimum grade of B in
COUN 588 and COUN 624,
- proof of professional
liability insurance through the American
Counseling Association, and
- written approval of
potential placement by the Internship
Coordinator.
Note: Successful completion
(i.e., grade of B or better) is required in COUN 654
before enrolling in COUN 674
V. Comprehensive Exam
Nearing completion of the program (i.e., after
completing 33 semester hours), the student will
register for the comprehensive examination given in
the Fall or the Spring.
