Montclair State University’s Master of Arts in Fine Arts – Studio Concentration (MAST) is a program for individuals who wish to pursue professional visual arts study.  MAST is an individually designed program for those committed to the visual arts as a means of expression, communication, knowledge and inquiry.

MAST encourages students to ask and answer difficult aesthetic, artistic and cultural questions:  What is art?  Why make art?  Who decides what is art and what is not art? Why am I making art?  Who am I making art for?  How does the art I make relate to me and to others?  What do with art once I’ve made it?  Why?  The MAST program encourages expressive freedom for all individuals and their ideas and work, thereby encouraging students to develop respectful, open and critical habits of mind.

The MAST program accommodates a range of applicant goals.  MAST serves the needs of:  (1) students who wish to develop their aesthetic ‘voice’ and acquire technical knowledge and skills in a studio specialization; (2) students who wish to prepare a professional portfolio of original art works suitable for application to an MFA program; (3) students who already hold art degrees and wish to gain knowledge and produce art works in a studio specialization they have not studied in the past; and (4) students who hold baccalaureates in other fields and wish to student art at a professional level.

The MAST curriculum combines sequenced coursework and independent study; studio and art history; and seminars to provide students with both the structured support and the flexibility needed to begin to develop a personal vision within the context of multiple contemporary and historical art and culture concerns.  Students complete a Visual Project and Paper as part of the MAST program.  Courses of study for MAST are highly individual.

MAST is a professional degree program.  A minimum of 33 credits is needed to complete the MAST program.  Depending upon the applicant’s background, prerequisites may be required to meet program admission standards.  Art history and studio deficiencies may be satisfied during the MAST program.  Students who do not have a baccalaureate in the visual arts may begin their MAST program by establishing an undergraduate equivalency in the visual arts.  MAST welcomes international students.  Students who complete the MAST program are not guaranteed admission into Montclair State University’s MFA program.

The MA in Fine Arts, Studio is a program offered by the Department of Art & Design within the College of the Arts.  For further information on this and other MA programs, visit the Department of Art & Design's Graduate Web pages
