MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING (MAT) ART
Graduate Program Coordinator Ms. Susan S. Hagen Dr. Dorothy Heard Montclair State University´s
Master of Arts in Teaching Art Education program (MATAE)
is designed for students who have a baccalaureate
degree and wish to be prepared to obtain New Jersey
initial instructional certification in art, K-12 and
a master´s degree simultaneously.
The MATAE offers students the
opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills
needed to effectively teach art in K-12 schools.
MATAE students take a sequence of state approved
courses that prepare them to receive state
certification. Through selected master´s courses in
education and art, students expand their knowledge
of pedagogical practices and art making and thinking
to incorporate higher-level concerns of the
professional educator and the professional artist.
The MATAE curriculum consists
of some of the riches courses offered by the
Department of Art and Design (DAD) and the Center of
Pedagogy (COP). The curriculum reflects the shared
goals of DAD and COP to encourage the development of
students who wish to guide the artistic development
of all young people. Good art education seeks to
enhance the creative expressions of the young in our
democratic and diverse society and insists upon
visual arts as a legitimate mode of knowledge and
form of inquiry. Coursework is contextualized by
supervised fieldwork.
The MATAE may be particularly
attractive to those students seeking to change
careers and enter the teaching field with a high
level of professionalism.
