Reading and Assignment Guidelines

  • I. Guidelines for Reading:
    • 1. Guidelines for Total Amount of Reading
      • a. 200-level courses: 1100-1500 total pages (i.e., on average 75-100 pages per week)
      • b. 300-level courses: 1500-2250 total pages (i.e., on average 100-150 pages per week)
      • c. 400-level courses: 1500-3000 total pages (i.e., on average 100-200 per week)
    • 2. Totals in all instances should include specific reading assignments and an approximation by the professor for all research assignments.
  • II. Guidelines for Assignments:
    • 1. Final grades for all 200-, 300-, and 400-level courses should not be based solely on in-class examinations
    • 2. At least on major assignment in all 200-, 300- and 400-level courses should involve a significant out-of-class writing assignment
      • a. For 200-level courses the significant writing assignment should be at least 5-7 pages in length (i.e., c 1250-2000 words)
      • b. For 300-level courses the significant writing assignment should be at least 7-10 pages in length (i.e., c 1750-3000 words)
      • c. For 400-level courses the significant writing assignment should be at least 8-12 pages in length (i.e., c 2500-3500 words)
    • 3. The specific nature of all significant writing assignments should be the professor’s discretion
