Team Physicians

MSU has been fortunate to attract an excellent group of physicians to aid in the care of the Red Hawk Athletes. These Medical Professionals provide state of the art, on-campus and referral services to Montclair State student athletes.

These professionals also take great interest in the education of the student athletic trainers. Students are afforded the opportunity to interact with the physician in the training room, on the field, in the office and even in the operating room. They take pride in the knowledge that they have helped mold quality athletic training professionals. The following is a biography on our four team physicians: Dr. Vincent K. McInerney, Dr. Richard Braver, Dr. Douglas J. Borkowski, and Dr. Robert M. Palacios.


Dr. Vincent K. McInerney MD

Vincent K. McInerney, MD has been with MSU the longest, starting as the team physician in 1989. Dr. McInerney is an orthopedic surgeon associated with St. Joesph's Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, NJ. He has a large and thriving sports medicine based practice and serves as a school/team physician for Montclair State as well as the following high schools: Clifton High School, West Milford High School, Passaic Valley High School, DePaul High School, and Butler High School.

Dr. McInerney is a life long NJ resident. He went to Boonton High School, Saint Peter's College, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. He did a Sports Medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School under Dr. Bertran Zarins. He is currently the Director of Orthopedic Education and the Director of the Sports Medicine/Human Performance Center at St. Joseph's Hospital. He is a member of the Committee on Medical Aspects in Sports for the Medical Society of NJ. Dr. McInerney has also worked with the US Olympic Committee as the coordinator of the Elite Athlete Project and as a Team Physician for the US Team Handball Federation.

Dr. Richard Braver, MD

Dr. Richard Braver is a Podiatrist who specializes in Sports Medicine. He has been associated with Montclair since 1992. He provides support to the MSU athletes both through his private practice and through weekly visits to the training room at Montclair.

Dr. Braver is a former high school All-American in Cross Country and accomplished collegiate runner who is very interested in Sports and Dance Medicine. Dr. Braver grew up in New Jersey and attended Pascack Valley High School. He then moved on to American University in Washington, D.C. and finally did his Podiatry training at the Dr. William School College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Braver is associated with Meadowlands, Pascack Valley, and St. Joseph's Hospitals. He provides Podiatric Medical Services to Fairleigh Dickinson University (Teaneck), and Montclair State University. Dr. Braver continues to be very involved in running and dance activities. He has provided coverage at numerous marathons including Boston and New York, is a regular contributor to Runners World, and is a consultant to the New York City Ballet Physical Therapists.

Dr. Douglas J. Borkowski, MD

Douglas J. Borkowski, MD is a 1982 graduate of Montclair State University who has returned to provide care to the athletes at his alma mater. He is a General Practioner specializing in Sports Medicine and is also Senior Medical Director of the HealthNet Medical Group (an affiliated group of Valley Hospital), Fairleigh Dickinson University (Teaneck), and the NJ Jackels minor league baseball team. Dr. Borkowski provides weekly on-campus care and advise to the Athletic Training Staff and Athletes at Montclair.

Dr. Borkowski graduated from Pascack Valley Regional High School, Montclair State University, and the New Jersey Medical School, UMDNJ. He is affiliated with the US Olympic Committee and has worked at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY. Dr. Borkowski is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, American College of Sports Medicine, American Running and Fitness Association, and is a Registered Physician of the USA Amateur Boxing Federation. He is also a member of the Committee on Medical Aspects in Sports for the Medical Society of New Jersey

Dr. Robert M. Palacios , MD

Robert Palacios, M.D. has been a team physician at Montclair State since 1993 when he joined the practice of Dr. Vincent McInerney and Northlands Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Associates. His association with Dr. McInerney is unique in that Dr. Palacios is Family Practice trained, specializing in Sports Medicine, while Dr. McInerney is an Orthopedic Physician. The blending of these two fine physicians and their different specialities is a real benefit to the athletes at Montclair. Dr. Palacios grew up in New York and graduated from Springfield Gardens High School. He went on to The State University of New York at Stoney Brook and later attended The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. Along with his primary practice at Northlands Orthopedics, he is affiliated with Clifton Family Practice and is responsible for the residents training in Sports Medicine. Dr. Palacios assists Dr. McInerney with the team physician duties at Clifton High School, West Milford High School, Passaic Valley High School, DePaul High School, and Butler High, as well as Montclair Immaculate Academy. Dr. Palacios is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Practice and sits on the Committee for Medical Aspects of Sports of the NJ Medical Society of New Jersey.
