After 12 years as head soccer coach, Rob Chesney is hanging up his whistle to pursue another kind of goal--raising money for the Athletic Department and its 24 teams.

In January, Chesney became the University's associate athletic director for Marketing and Fund-raising. "This is a good opportunity to challenge myself in athletics," he said. "I enjoy coaching, but this was the right opportunity at the right time. I'm excited about being more involved in the administrative aspect of the department. I am now in a position to help all the programs and student-athletes. The more I can do, the more satisfying the work."

Rob's new duties include searching for corporate and local sponsorships, working with Athletics alumni, and establishing promotions and special events. "Next year we'd like to have five corporate sponsorships, at least 15 local sponsors, and an Athletics alumni database of 25,000," he said.

A Montclair State graduate himself, Rob is looking forward to his involvement with alumni, including coordinating team reunions and making them aware of new developments in the department and at the University. "If we keep them informed we're hoping they'll want to get involved and stay involved," he said. "The response has been good and we can only expect it to get better as we do more for alumni."

Rob is also familiar with another group he must work with--the coaches. "As a former coach, I know the demands placed on them," he said. "Working together, I'm sure we can do great things for all the sports teams."

For Rob, working to advance the Athletic Department is more than a job position, it's a passion. "I've had great experiences at Montclair State," he said. "The more I can do to benefit Athletics, the more I feel I'm doing my job and helping the University."
